The Straits state park is just over the Mackinac bridge. It has 2 parts to the park and upper and the lower part. The lower has camp sites right on the big lake with un-matchable views of the 5 mile long suspension bridge. The upper part had some pull thru sites. No beach to swimm at, but just down the road 20 miles west on US2, was miles of sandy lake michigan beach. Very easy to pull over and park a bus. The waves, sandy beach to walk and swimming are the best in the uppper peninsula along this part of US2. The big mac bridge is lighted at night a sight to see. The beautiful white pillers are 510 feet tall on this bridge. The ore freighters pass under it right in front of you at this camp ground. We liked this more than the Golden Gate bridge in frisco. The town of St Ignace is walking distance with most anything a person could need. All the ferry boats leave from this city to visit world famous Mackinaw Island (fudge land)a story in itself. This as most all michigan state parks is one not to miss. More the RnR type place rather than a mad house camping. We stayed here a few times and will return again and again. I call it a Big Mac Attack A reservation is recommended way in advance to be able to stay in the lower part of the park. http://www.midnrreservations.com/index.cfm |
