About burning used oil……been in market a few years.

I believe TD is talking this to improve fuel mileage which use perhaps about quart used oil in fuel tank for every 200 to 2k miles.

The following engine oil management system is injecting new oil from storage tank to oil pan while equal amount of used oil into fuel tank to burn. This engine oil management system has been in Cummins, DD and all other diesels for several years.
Cummins factory equip Centinel;

EMP Oilmate for all brand of diesel;
http://www.oilmate.com/ Click on “How it work” download tab at upper portion of page.

I just learn this;
Electronic control thermostat valve

Nothing new of what being already tested at diesel manufacture’s engineering department.

Most interesting Jerry, thanks for sharing that. I surely was unaware of that system.

If you click on the "enjoy several benefits" details button - you will see that it 'adds' time between oil changes by extending the time that the mill operates with a higher degree of contamination - this is tantamount to doing 'partial' oil changes more frequently - and they require oil samples at regular intervals (bad result you have to change it any way ?) -

Niles (sorry - still not convinced)

Is this a CARB (Calif. Air Resources Board)approved system and practice? I seriously doubt it.

I can tell you that a lot of trucking firms ran the used oil through a filter and into fuel tanks but the EPA put a stop to that a long time ago. Probably about 15 years ago

I did not know that either. Do you have a reference to that? Wonder if Cummins has found a way around it.

Oh that sneaky terrible Cummins, they are going down the tubes for sure. First they put that dirty, filthy, stinking, worn out, shredded, enging oil in their engine fuel in full violation of the EPA and against the advice of their mechanics and now they expect people to actually buy their engines. Bye bye Cummins!

TD: Nothing to do with not wanting to learn, just whine, and wish for better mileage. Everywhere in the US is not West Texas. Some places do have laws and enforce them. I have to believe that adding significant quantities of used motor oil to the fuel is going to produce a visibly blue exhaust (since it certainly does if I consume too much from the crankcase). In many areas of CA, and I suspect other areas of the country, a visible exhaust emission will get you a visit to the Judge. In a commercial application, such as a truck tractor, it will get u tagged off-the-road prior to that visit to the Judge.

Don't travel much? How about 16k in the bus last year, and I didn't put it on the road until May. Nearly 100k since May 1997 in the 2 buses. When was the last time you left Texas in yours, other than maybe going to Ok.? Hell, I probably wracked up more miles in Texas last year than you, and I was just trying to get out of the place. Get your butt out there and get the fans on so I can come down for the test run.

Smoke is a valid part of the the consideration, however oil smoke caused by poor compression, worn rings etc seems to be a haze, but I have never noticed any added smoke when those burning motor oil in fuel have a proper compression engine. Would take some testing there, but combustion ignition seems to take care of the problem. Maybe a catalytic converter would be needed?

I think Don's right. Warmed, good condition, high-compression diesels can run on just about anything: kerosene, jet fuel, used veggie, whale blubber...

BUT, add stuff to your tank at your own risk... risk to your engine AND risk from the fuel tax Feds.

You are not paying attention Brian, look at another thread. "Additives" are permitted by the Feds, so you just call the veggie oil an additive and you are in fine shape. Nobody cares that way, even if the "additive" is in huge quantities.

I wonder how much monmey the tax man looses on people burning used oil/veggy oil. I bet in the big picture it is not very much. The US burns a lot of diesel fuel and motor oil/veggy oil does not come close.
