Folks, I need recommendations for a good, bus-friendly diesel repair shop within perhaps 1,000 miles of Phoenix. The two shops already on my list to call are Southern Oregon Diesel, and PEDCO (in California), both of which are familiar to me from many rallies. I am in need of a complete in-frame rebuild, to include liners, rings, the turbo, and perhaps valve guides and main bearings. This is on an 8V92TA, DDEC-II. Complicating matters is the fact that the engine is a very tight fit in my German-built Neoplan, which was made for a smaller motor. The big Detroit was shoehorned in with a lot of cutting, welding, and probably cursing. Likely, it will need to be slid out of the frame at least part way to access all the cylinders, and items like the Webasto may need to be moved for this purpose. So general-purpose diesel shops without a lot of coach-specific experience are not good choices for me. We are full-timers, so shops that will allow us to remain on board during the process will be given preference, though that is not essential. My plan is to start calling around for estimates (both cost and schedule) tomorrow (Monday) morning. By the end of the day, I hope to have a decision made and start heading to the chosen shop from here (Phoenix). So please send me any recommendations or suggestions you may have by no later than Monday afternoon. Post responses here, or you may send them to me directly by email. Thanks! -Sean |

Sean, sorry to hear of your dificulties. near the Prevost dealer in Mira Loma, Ca is a Detroit Diesel facility. They work on buses all the time, altough yours is certainly unique. It might be worth a call (although Pedco might be about the same travelling distance). All I have for a contact method is through the Prevost Service Manager, Nathan Park. 951-360-2566 x224, although I'm sure that DD corporate will also have the number and address. While there is also a DD shop in San Diego, I recommend you stay away from them with a bus. Best of luck Keep us posted if there is anything we can do to help. |

Sean, see if you can get hold of Rayhound. He had a shop in ElCentro that did him right. I can't find his email right this minute. |

Sean, Sorry to hear of your engine problems. I'd highly recomend the shop that did my engine rebuild. Though not truly bus people they are very experienced on Detroits, especially the two strokes. They are in Hilsboro Oregon and called Hillsboro Diesel 800 578 6160 or 503 640 4669. Their address is 2770 S E TV highway, Hillsoro Or. 97123. Feel free to give me a call to discus further. My phone # is 606 423 9854. Regards Jerry 4107 1120 |

I was really well treated by Nathan Parker at the Mira Loma Prevost facility last winter. I wouldn't be afraid to trust his recommendation for a shop and, if he said they could do the job, they would treat you fairly. They are also really easy access off of I-10. They have a large parking lot with about 8 electrified sites along the edge of it. (800) 421-9958 |

Sean, Also a possibility for you to check out, a fellow bus nut, Dick Warnica highly recommended a place in Phoenix. He has a Prevost with an 8V92 in it and has had them work on it for him. Whether or not they can do an in frame, but might be worth a call since you are there already. Sorry I do not have a phone number. they are All Aboard American $70.00 /hr They run a fleet of buses and work on them too. |

Add Coach Maintenance in Williams, CA. Ted Campbell knows busses and he charges a fair price. www.coachmaintenance.com |
