Hi Folks,

This weekend I intend to install my new Tu-Flow 700 Air Compressor on my 8V71. Are there any tips or tricks of the trade I should know about that are not in Da Book? I have the V71 book, and the Bendix tech sheet as well as the instructions that came with the unit. Also, one side of the gasket has a red line of some gel or something all the way around it. Does that go engine-side or compressor-side?

The compressor job went very well. I had some help, which was great. Not sure if I could have done it alone - a lot more bloody knuckles would be evident if I had tried. In my V-drive, fortunately, the compressor is stomach level and easily accessable standing at the rear bumper. Still a heavy bugger, but managable. A little tricky was getting the gear off of it. The nut was tight and I had no way of locking the compressor from spinning. . .argh. Impact driver was fruitless. Ended up taking the linking gear thing (I am sure it has a proper name) off the engine and mating it to the compressor, puting a pipe wrench on it to lock the shaft, and turning the nut with a torque wrench. Reversed the proceedure to get the gear on the new compressor. Was very lucky, at 100 ft/lbs, the cotter pin holes lined up exactly! Also, tricky was getting the compressor gear teeth lined up to the engine shaft again. My friend put a big wrench on the other side of the accessory shaft (radiator side) and turned it as I pushed the compressor into place. A few quarter turns of the shaft and, eventually, the teeth lined up and she slid into place. No leaks- water, oil nor air. Only issue was that the truck shop sold me a D-2 governor with cuts out at 125 and cuts in at 105. My original was 120 and 100 respectively. Hope that won't be a problem. . . If so, I can get a new one or put my old one back on. All things considered the project went very well. And boy she looks pretty all fresh and green. Sure wish the rest of the engine were that clean and new!
