Fellow busnut Tom Caffrey & his lovely wife Doreen stopped over this evening for a visit while traversing between Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks. Anyway, Tom seems to be having a problem with the Jake on the 8V71 in his 4106. He describes it as: ~ When engine is cold, Jake works fine throughout the rpm range. ~ When engine is up to operating temp, Jake is very weak, doesn't seem to work at all near top of rpm range, but does kick in just above idle. Any ideas what the problem might be?? TIA, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Being that Jakes work on oil pressure, it looks like the system is loosing pressure with heat and the thinning of the oil.>>>Dan |

I posted an answer on the other board that solved my problem. I suspect that it is not oil pressure as the engine is revved up when you operate the Jakes and engine oil pressues is only indirectly affecting Jake operation. My belief is that if the pressure is 10 or 60 psi, the Jakes should work. Richard |

Pull the valve covers there is a 1/4 " tube that connects the two jake packs. This is probly loose snug it up and tighten the lock (jam) nut. If these leak they will not build enuff oil psi when the jakes are aplyed. Easy fix if that is the prob. Mine were doing the same thing now they work great. Rick 74 mc-8 |

Thanks to all of you who posted ideas about possible fixes for our Jakes, a complete manual that Ed Carroll downloaded for us and very good service that we received from Southern Oregon Diesel, I have a much better understanding of our Jakes. There were several things wrong with our Jakes. One was a loose control valve wire, another was the that the control valve tangs were bent so that the connecting wire screws were nearly touching the Jake bridges and there was one control valve with a second o-ring installed over an old hard one. Dwayne started on our work a little after 8 and he had everything apart, cleaned up and reassembled, with us out the door before coffee time. The Jakes have worked perfectly ever since. I asked Dwayne which of the problems caused our symptoms and he said that he didn't know, but he was sure that more than one of them was involved. Before we got to Southern Oregon Diesel, I had already tried bypassing the buffer switch and I removed the rear valve cover looking for a loose tube. No luck on either one. A year ago, we had fried the Jake relay, but had never found out what caused it. I think the cause has been removed. I expect if I ever have a Jake problem again, that I will be able to troubleshoot it myself because of what I have learned this time around. Thanks for your help. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher |
