WE HAD A DIESEL SPILL IN ONE OF OUR BAY AREAS WHICH IS CARPETED WITH AN INDOOR OUTDOOR KIND OF MATERIAL. THIS CARPET IS PERMANENT AND CAN NOT BE REMOVED. THE PROBLEM IS THE DIESEL SMELL IS IN THE COACH AS WELL. WE HAVE AIRED IT OUT FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS NOW AND THE SMELL JUST DOES NOT GO AWAY. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT WE COULD DO TO REMOVE THE DIESEL SMELL? ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED. THANKS!

nutmeg...

Reminds me of a driver at a bus company I worked for... He
"fooled around" on his trips. He'd get back and wash his hands
at the pump, then put a lil' fuel on his neck.. Really killed any
perfume smells that may have still been lingering...

If it's indoor/outdoor stuff, you can try pressure washing it
with any dish washer detergent.. sprinkling nutmeg may help also.

First you need to eliminate the diesel fuel from the bay. Use something like "Purple Stuff" in a tank sprayer diluted 50% Spray a little water to dampen the carpet, Apply it and let it sit for 30 minutes., Then wash it all out carefully, If you have access to hot water it will work better.
After you rinse let it drain for a while and go back over it again. This should remove the main diesel oils from the bay.
Then go to Home Depot and find their aisle that has ZEP cleaning products in the Gallon Jugs.
Locate one that Cleans,Sanitizes and Deodorizes.
Use it as directed on the bay carpet. Maybe a couple of times. Be sure you find one that works on biologicals as the furry little things in diesel fuel can partially survive the purple stuff. Air out the bay with a window fan until it's dry and check the smell, It should be gone by now.
As for the interior, Use Fabreeze heavy duty formula and plenty of fresh air. The diesel odor will go away. The Fabreeze is great stuff and when used with good cleaning products will just about eliminate any hidden smells.

Rent a wet carpet treatment cleaner machine from the local store and use TSP (or if you live where TSP is banned powdered diswashing soap IS 6% tsp and does fine).

Be liberal with the liquid as it needs to get behind the carpeting to the surface below,

If its only in a bay , floding with the TSP mixture for a couple of hours and a wet dry vacume should do.

Paul you are right the coffee bean trick works great and is sure better than gas or deisel fuel, one of the guys that i worked with used deisel and put it on his upper arms with a musel shirt on and had his arm exposed to the sun on a very hot day and sure got some very big nasty blisters for his efforts on his arm,we did not ask if that was the only place that he got blistered.

Be careful when crossing boarders with a lot of coffee bean smell, The drug dogs are trained to pick up on that as it's used to mask "other" smells.

Or maybe I just saw that on CSI... Dunno...

Coffee absorbs moisture , so perhaps you saw the gun being kept in an old James Gardner PI TV show .

After you clean it good, try ODO BAN on any residual odors. Stuff is amazing.

Stewart chemicals makes a powder used by the oil burner heating service guys that is a powder you sprinkle on a spill and it will both absorb and deodorize. Works! I've used it many times when in a customers home. You could probably call someone who services oil equipment to obtain ome, or perhaps an oil supplier depending on where you are located.

I have heard that a de-ionizer will remove most any odor in a matter of hours such as cigarette smoke or fuel. I do not know where you get one or what they cost. They plug in to 120 volts. I have seen them used in hotel rooms to get rid of tobacco smoke odors.

Hi Richard, I think you are talking about ozone generators. Don't breate the concentrated fumes! We used to build transformers for them, they are used in this type application- odor killing, especially after floods and such. Do a google on them, you want one with a min of 300 mg/hour. Bob

Starting fluid will clean up a lot of things. Spay it on and keep away from flames till it dries. Amonia will remove many odors and most oil stains also. I have used it in a carpet cleaner, but you need good ventilation, both bay doors open and maybe a fan.

Stephan,
Wow, I wouldn't want to be spraying ether around anything. That's just nutz...Sorry..

That might work for some. Heck why not just find a 5 gallon pail of "FREON TF" oops I think thats banned now. Or Tricholerthane degreaser. Or better yet Simple Green in a 50% dilution and let it sit and work.

If you just have to use a solvent, Contact you local Safety-Clean operation and get theirs. It works and is not condusive to dramatic explosions
and it's non corrosive.

Ammonia is not only a poison it is a corrosive. Works good on glass but around aluminum and carbon steel it can cause excessive oxidation.

You might try a combination of white vinegar and diswashing detergent if all else fails inluding the budget, But you have to rinse very well.

He could boil that vinegar real easy after he soaks that bay
down with a few dozen cans of starting fluid....

That oughta' smell like an 11 ton salad fire about thirty miles
downwind....
