A while ago someone complained that since Radio Shack basically stopped stocking real parts that there was a reduction in sources for those neat little parts that we all got accustomed to needing from time to time. There are some out there but I found the one that started the Radio Shack brand, Allied Electronics of old. They are still around and have lots of goodies. http://www.alliedelec.com/ I found a couple of relays for one of my onan generators that nobody else had and they were cheap compared to the aggravation of trying to find and engineer something else to replace them with. Enjoy, |

Also www.mouser.com To anyone professional, Radio shack stuff is and has been a joke for as long as radio shack has existed. Allied electronics never had a thing to do with Radio Shack.. R.S. is and always has been run by Tandy corporation, specializing in importing cheap overseas junk. Allied has always been a USA based distributor. They are good but they do have some purchasing minimums that can make your life miserable. Digikey and Mouser have "real" stuff. Also a great source for surplus electronic parts: (lots of LEDs, 12v relays, etc) www.allelectronics.com |

I second that about Radio Shack. I have never had a good expierence with them. It is almost like everything they sell is designed to fail. |

Just for info back in the late 60's or early 70's its to far back to recall exactly when but I had purchased several pieces of test equiptment kits from allied electronics. all good stuff, but not long after I received a letter in the mail stating that my kits will still be covered under warranty but they were being bought out by tandy corp. and that was who to contact if I needed anything. Not Long after A radio shack popped up in the neighborhood. |

Local Radio Shack Manager was overheard as calling the store "Cell Phone Shack" to another customer. www.Allelectronics.com www.Halted.com www.Jameco.com www.Digikey.com www.Alliedelec.com www.Mouser.com www.Carlton-Bates.com www.Graybar.com www.Grainger.com Many more companies where they came from. Individual components are not dead, customers are just being sold finished products more nowadays (which really ticks me off...), so they are harder to get. Tim |

Hey, Don't shoot at the messenger. I also have all of those other suppliers in my list, However after checking with all of them including MCM and Mendelson to mention a couple, Nobody had the relays that I needed save Allied. I also purchased a really neat PLC kit that runs on 24 volts D.C. that I am going to program and incorporate into my MCI to monitor those irritating little things that can make a big mess when you aren't looking. A Brain to Run the Drain....$$$$$$ 12 Inputs (4 analog & 8 digital) and 8 outputs. I never worry about minimum orders cause I can find all kinds of stuff to restock my goodies drawer... |

I almost forgot: Lafayette Radio Shack I really liked their stuff back in the 60's... Oh.. Oh... Eico Citizen Band Radio Kits. Johnson Whiteface CB's... Tubes Tubes and More tubes... Those were the days.. Huh???? Popular Electronics when electronics were real! Popular Science when they showed you, not sold you! Gawd I hate getting old, All the good stuff that I saw as a kid is now gone and it really bugs me that now that I can afford it I can't afford it and nobody makes it anymore. ( Oxymoron? ) I used to think that was a guy with a cutting torch! |

DrDave didn't mean to sound like I was shootin' the mesanger, but most of those guys have stuff that isn't listed in their catalogs... Have you checked out the Parallax PLC stuff? (www.parallax.com) It's not usually a complete product (although they do sell a din rail mount industrial version), but you have more flexability when you can lay out a PCB to fit somewhere you have space (the route I chose...) On can easily purchase the individual components and build out from there. Tim |

I grew up on Heathkit. How cool was it back in the 70's to built your own television set? |

I forgot heathkit, Benton Harbor Mich.. Those Tv's and the Hammond Organs must have had 20,000 little parts! The PLC I got is a Millenium II SA20 series. http://www.crouzet-usa.com/millenium/en/ came with software and cable. Thier programming software demo is free and can run sims and design then load into the real unit when you have the sim where you want it. I did an Allen Bradley ( TSX07 )Telemechanique back in 96 on a paper cutter and it's still working today. Handy little gadgets, sure beats a handful of relays, diodes, transistors and guesswork. Ahh... Computers.. Gave me a heart attack and bypass and now an ICD.. And I guess I will never learn... |

Thanks for letting us know which electronic bus-nut is! Dave Harley, Jerry Liebler, Gary Stadler, Mike, Ray Lala, Tim Strommen and Vin. Anyone else? Count me as amateur type since 60’s. Yes the good old oldies are long gone…Lafayette, Olson; http://www.childhoodradios.com/board/board_topic/334481/30941.htm Love to make things connects after energized. It always amazing that only three type of components will run anything after engineered design. Capacitor, Transistor (bye bye tube) and Resistor. David….thanks for “Millenium” link. Only know “X10” system. FWIW Sojourn for Christ, Jerry |
