I've been looking for a good used 8v71 for my '77 AMG. I found one in Florida, I live in Arkansas. Does anyone know Dick Wolfert in Springhill? He has an 8v71 out of a 1961 4106. The front half of the bus burned in a fire. He says the engine, trans and rearend were undamaged. The engine has been sitting without being run for three years. He says that shouldn't hurt it. What do you guys think?

I'm not familiar with your bus. Is yours a v-drive or a t-drive? '06's are v-drive, and if you have a t-drive the engine will spin the wrong way... unless you can shoehorn in the whole drivetrain in your bus.

My '06's engine sat for 15 years and was only started about every five years. Dry climate here in CO, though. After replacing all fluids, amongst other things, I've now ran it over 2000 miles so far without any issues... knock on wood.

Anywhere more humid (like FL) can rust out the cylinder walls when sitting, since it's doubtful the mill was ever "pickled" according to 'Da Book. I'd go see it to watch it fire off and run up through the rev. range before committing to anything. An easy start and lack of smoke might be fairly convincing.

It's hard for anyone to say what adverse affects a 3 yr. set has had on the engine. However, it is not unusual for one to sit 3 yrs. un-operated and suffer no problems from it. It certainly is not the most ideal way of storing one by just letting it set in a partially burned out bus and un-prepped for an extended storage by being sealed. I've seen a lot of them, and heard of a lot more, than were fine after sitting for several yrs. Afterall, you don't know that it was good when the bus went down, so it's a chance anyway u approach it.

If u can get it for less than core price, it's probby worth a shot. Unless u know the guy and can trust his word, I would approach it as a used, in need of overhaul engine, and go from there. If the engine has been exposed to direct, heavy rain or moisture conditions, I wouldn't even consider it. If it's been somewhat protected from rains and such, it's a rebuildable core and no more, unless he can make it run and demonstrate otherwise.

Thanks to everyone that has responded to this message. The AMG has a v-drive Allison 730 in it. In my local area left-hand 8v71's seem to be hard to find. I really want to find an engine that I could just put in the bus and get it back on the road.

Thanks again.
