Before I do it, I wanted to know what's easier, disconnect the drive shaft in my Toad (03 2dr. 2wd Chevy Blazer) and wire it up or take the thing out. I know you have to mark the positions on both ends if you take it out and cap any openings etc...seems easier just to wire, clamp and cable it up, no? |

there are two 'u-bolts',each has two nuts on it,remove them,be careful not to let the cups fall off, tape the cups together, this is in front of the pinion shaft, then pull the driveshaft out of the trans. ....you will have some leakage on the trip,be sure to top off trans. fluid before driveing it.put driveshaft inside, the bus or car. |

If you make a wrong turn, or have to back up for any reason at all (getting fuel at some obscure place), you're going to wish you didn't take that shaft apart..... How'd it be, if you left it idling for the trip? |

Sean, are you CERTAIN there is no procedure in the manual for towing all four down without disconnecting the drive shaft. My Chevvy Tahoe has this procedure outlined. I would certainly not like to get stranded on the Alkan with the toad disabled. Richard |

Richard, He has a 2wd Blazer. I have a 4wd Tahoe, like yours and it will tow 4 down. No provision as such for the 2wd Chevy's. Sean, Since you are taking a lengthy trip, I would suggest that you remove the driveshaft and put it in the Blazer, where it won't fall out. The John Muir philosopy of putting all small parts in a well marked baggie is probably smart, as well. My experience with the Alcan is that anything and everything which will shake, rattle and roll will do so, even some things you never thought about. Don't ask me how I know, but if you see my extra propane tank beside the road somewhere south of Tok, you can have it. Michael |

For an extended tow, if you remove the driveshaft, I would SERIOUSLY consider going to a wrecking yard or driveshaft shop and obtain a rear tranny yoke to slip into the tailshaft of the tranny. Simple grades can cause a signifcant loss of tranny fluid out the rear shaft opening if you don't engage the seal. Things could splash forward from rear wheels contaminating the tranny as well. No, don't resort to a baggie and a rubber band! If you do, you'll likely end up with a "full baggie" (don't ask me how I know!) Onward and Upward |

Everyone has thier own ideas, but I towed many a mile with the driveshaft tied up, and duct tape (truck driver tool box) around the u-joint. Never lost a shaft, and never lost a u-bolt or nuts. I put some large sheet metal screws in the shaft tunnel to wire it up to. Steve |

TD- One of the guys that came down from Vermont for the winter, didn't get his Remco pump installed in his Buick before the trip. He said he let it idle while he towed it.... about 1,400 miles worth... He had the pump put on down here... So, uhhh.... whazzduh big deal with using a tank of gas to get the job done? It beats the hell out of getting stuck not being able to back up without having to crawl under that towed vehicle... Before I bought my Remco, I've towed our Caravan plenty of times.... I just let it idle away... |

one good thing is that my truck doesn't need to have a Remco fluid pump..I tried to get the Remco driveshaft disconnect but couldn't take care of it in time up here in Alaska. Will be getting that very soon in the lower 48. Thanks for the advice so far! |

If I keep the shaft on the car, just wired up and bracketted into place with stainless clamp tape etc, will i still require some kind of cover for the rear axle? If so, does NAPA or the like carry it?.... Ughh..I'm dealing with my tow brackets today. I installed them on the blazer last night but for some reason I've got about 1/2" on either side too little room for the towbar's solid one piece mount, to fit...I can't figure it out..My installation is perfect as per instructions, so i'm going to a trailer place to have them deal with it!! Fun Fun!! Then the Driveshaft comes off the blazer in the morning just before we leave. |

Go to the car dealer and trade it in for one with a manual trans or 4x4 and not worry about the drave shaft thing. I towed a older ford mustang with it ideling for only 50 miles and soon after the trans went out. From the towing ? I dont know why but I wont do that with any car now! LOL..If I could trade this POS I would!! But can't...However, I got a UHAUHL Trailer instead because there is some problem with my Ebay bought tow brackets and it seems no one can even look at it to help me out up here..I went to every place that deals with towing today..Haveta leave so will deal with it in lower 48...At least I dont' have to deal with disconnecting drive shaft but my new towbar will have sit unused for a while....I'll get the REMCO disconnect before I use the towbar and be done with it...Pain in the ass but lots of pressure off my mind now... |

****UPDATE*****...OMG, I got the tow brackets to work, the tow bar all hooked up(Roadmaster Falcon 2) wired in the Magnetic lights with 24 volt bulbs...NO UHAUL NEEDED!!! Just have to load a few things in the bus in the morning, pull the truck behind the bus, unhook the driveshaft and wire it up, disconnect the battery of the TOAD so I can turn the key on and the steering wheel will remail unlocked as per the tow bar's instructions....... OMG..It seems i'm ready to go...PLEASE Put out the good vibes for us!! Thanks! |

Sean, you shouldn't have to disconnect the battery. You should be able to turn the key 1 click from the locked position. That will unlock the wheel but not turn the ignition on. |

Oh yeah! Just think about how amazed I was when I towed my little datsun pickup for 100 miles with the steering wheel locked...and the wheels slightly turned... oops... the bus felt nothing but the ~brand new~ michelin radial tires on my little truck were worn to the cord.... ugh... I stuck one of those driveshaft quick-disconnects by Remco on to my truck. It worked pretty well. http://www.drivetrain.com/remco.html |

Sean, Have a great trip. You will be traveling through possibly the most beautiful place in North America. You will never forget this trip. Be safe, and we are glad your bus worries are behind you. Oh, as you drive along, practice sayin "eh" after every sentence, otherwise the Canucks will not understand you... Michael |
