I would like to try to put air shocks on my 1982 Mercedes 300SD. It has the rear shocks inside the spring and uses either SENSA-TRACŪ MONOTUBE SHOCK ABSORBERS 39006 or BILSTEIN HEAVY DUTY B46460511W126. I cannot find a dimmensions chart for these shocks and air shocks to try to find a near match or convince myself it cannot be done. I need to be able to increase the allowable tongue weight for a trailer. I have a class 2 hitch that works fine but the rear sags too much. Can anyone help me with a source of information or your experience.

Stephen,

Awhile back in the aftermarket custom sport truck magazine (where they lower the suspension), there was a place that would make shocks with airbags on the outside for custom applications. Possibly the best of both worlds for you.

Also you may be able to modify the air bags off of an older 420sel.

Hope this helps,

Does a 420SEL hav springs and airbags or air suspension only. I have to be able to fit these shocks inside the spring. If you come accross the name of the place doing the cusom air shocks please let me know. I believe it is bus related enough to just post to my attention. When any of us go full time we have special needs in a toad. I have found it is much more economical to use a trailer than have a pickup truck for occasional use. Someday I may have to rent a Uhaul trailer to pick up a heavy part for my bus when I am on the road.
