Can I charge my house batteries with my bus alternator? I have 4 gel cell batteries with about 800 ampres total. what size wire should I use to go from my alternator? I want to run one roof air while I'm driving, is this possible? Thankyou for any info. Tom

Tom,
What bus? What voltage is the bus alternator? What voltage is your house system? If the voltages match, AND you've got a 'proper' inverter, AND you've got a big enough alternator then you can run roof airs with the engine alternator. I have a 12 volt bus, a Trace SW2512 inverter,a 780 AH house battery bank consisting of 4 L16s in series/parallel(flooded cells), the bus alternator is a gear driven 50DN rated at 300 amps. I've run 1500 watts of air conditioning for many hours off of the bus alternator thru the inverter. My intertie from bus to house is 00 wire with a 200 amp circuit breaker and solenoid contactor in it.

What voltage do YOUR gell cells require to charge? MAXIMUM recomended?

Its usually lower than wet batts so require a different V regulator setting, which may or may not undercharge the chasis batts.
