We have an 8v71 Turbo with advance timing in our Prevost bus and need some trouble shooting ideas:

* Overheats a little 200- 210 range (no grades 75 to 90 air temp;

* Exterior of radiator has been cleaned;

* Based on looking into the inside, the radiator looks to been clean;

* Water pump has just replaced; and

* No trash of any kind in antifreeze that was drained.

The Bus runs great, only other issue is it has to crank a few times to fire...good power, very little smoke.

Any ideas of what to do next?

Thanks in advance - Paul

Paul,
You should check with DD but I believe that no 8V71 turbo's use advanced timing. This could be the problem.

All of above and more..........

Visual inspect core's fins for loosen. Otherwise missing or loosen fins over core or tube lessen cooling effectiveness.

If all above is clean & good fins soldered to core, then check for cores plugged.

Get an IR (laser) temp gun to individual record (memorize) each vertical core’s temp about 5” under top tank before fan cooled to compare after fan cooled toward bottom tank. The coolest ones are slower flow thru core…restricted.

Laser temp gun is handier then we think. Another word once you own one you wonder why not sooner.
Tires, all kind of heat check around engine, trans, cooling lines, wire connection (weak connection under load) and many, many more thermo check points.

Caution be sure it LASER EQUIP so you can pin point to source from a distance.

Lower cost unit without laser will work if you physically reach & contact to source.

Then visual check around radiator for air flow leakage…should be sealed rubber & sheet metal filler so max flow thru radiator. Insulating pipe foam wraps tubing is good to fill large gaps.

Be sure air cleaner is clean or replace to avoid unburned fuel from lower air fuel ratio.

Check the fan belts loose worn or slipping belts can overheat a engine. Check belt slippage with engine stopped, try to turn the fan if it turns you are slipping.
