Take your checkbook and the retirement fund! For a partial (3 qts. total of base color, 3 colors + the clear, no body work) $11,800.) His work is generally great, but I have seen a couple that he did that he would not have been paid for. Just spoke to someone the other day that knew of a complete job he did recently for 8k, said it looked good, didn't give the details other than no graphics, 2 colors.

While you are on the subject of painting, anyone out there have any experience with STARJET in Columbus? I just sent them a note to go to them and get done if I like samples of what they have done. Any experiences out there?

I have a good friend that sold his Eagle last year that had a StarJet paint job that was 8-9 yrs old. The absolute best and most graphically catching paint job I have ever seen, barring none, including anything J. Stahr ever did. I have no idea what it cost originally but it still looked like a new paint job last year and it was outside probably 1/2 of those yrs. You could not find a flaw with a magnifying glass.

You must caution yourselves - "Star", ""Stahr", "John Starr", "J. Starr", "Star Jet", "Stahr Jet", amongst others are very convoluted definitions, and do not necessarily identify the artist - my understanding is that John Stahr is now out west primarily doing business for Marathon - the "John Stahr" that I am familiar with most recently was in 'Polk City' Florida and owned an H3 with a very unique paint job - I'm interested in hearing other responses to this - there's a lot of confusion about this subject - lets here the "whole" story - Niles

FWIW, I had my paint done at Willy's, and I am very happy with it. Mike Wilson has sold his old shop in Eugene, though, and I believe he is now doing all his painting in Bend. I think he has also changed the name to Evolution Graphics. Phone number is the same and still works, and you will probably get his wife Sherry on the phone. They still live in Eugene, and I think Mike drives out to Bend every week to paint.

John Stahr is still in Eugene. He and Mike Wilson left Marathon years ago. John now focusses on airplanes, and I think he only does a bus on very rare special occasions. He no longer has his own booth, and he was using Mike's booth over at Willy's when he needed one. Now that Mike has sold the booth, I'm not sure what arrangement John has.

Interestingly, Mike called John in to help him with my coach, so I have "Mike Wilson" flames down one side, and "John Stahr" flames down the other. They are two subtly different styles, and most people don't notice until it is pointed out. Of course, you can never see both sides at once. so it's just a fun fact, and not any kind of issue.

John Stahr also designed and painted the "Odyssey" logo on the back of our coach.

Many photos on our photo site at http://Odyssey.SmugMug.com (and a handful on our blog at http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com), including a bunch of shots of Odyssey being painted at Willy's.

Can't say enough good things about him, and he gave me a fair price as well.

Mike is scheduled to be at Bus'n'USA coming up in a couple weeks in Rickreall, OR.

Niles,

AFAIK, John signs all his work. Should be somewhere on the back of the coach.

Otherwise, you could give him a shout. His web site is http://www.stahrdesign.com/ and I think there is contact information on there.

Everyone has good and bad days. Star Jet of Columbus butchered the paint job they did on our coach. I read something about a "booth" in one of the posts. Cahill painted my bus late at night in a regular service bay in July with the door wide open. I not only got a crappy paint job but various insects as a bonus. And the life time warranty must be the life of the bugs.

Isn't it funny how one guy loves & one guy hates the same painter.........I guess I have heard good & bad about all. I suppose all of us have supporters & detractors in our business lives, personal lives, relationships, etc.... I guess if all of us were perfect there would be no divorce, & pencils would'nt have erasers.

There are a few "hidden artists" that are out there as well. Jerry Watson, Howard Anderson, Walter D'Andrea, Luis DelRio, Shane Parker, Dalvin Pirtle. A couple of them just split off of large companies & are now out on there own. Nashville & Orlando are pretty rich with good, experienced, paint & body shops.

I've seen some backyard jobs that look almost as good as a booth painted pro job. I have $600 in materials in my paint job done in my back yard and it looks better than my buddies Perterbilt that just came out of a "pro" shop...$7000. The pro jobs in the 10-12K range usually don't look 8-10K better than a good backyard job.

I was thinking about going there mostly for the sanding and body work.

Brian: Manuel Amador in Algodones. Last year he gave me an estimate that I considered somewhat overboard for Mexico. Cartainly cheaper by far than anything I got up here, but high by Baja & Mex. standards. I spoke to someone a couple of months ago that got a good price from him this past December (under 4k for complete strip and 2 color paint). Like most of these painters, his results seem to be mixed. Guess it depends on how he felt that day. I do know that u don't dare try to rush Manuel; guarantee for a less than satisfactory job. There is also supposedly a good painter in Puerto Pinasco (Rocky Point). I have seen a couple of repair jobs he has done and they were excellent.

Rich...

You are well informed with the new painters out there and they all think they are Piccasso's and want to charge what a well established painter charges. I certainly would not want someone to learn on my coach, but they don't have to charge like heart doctors.

It is Dick and Dee Cahill that run Starjet and I have heard some pretty good feedback. It would break my heart to get a poor job done on my baby, but I cannot afford $35,000 the big boys charge.

From what i was told i have the second paint job that John ever did on a bus, (68 MCI 5A ) but his signature got scratched up some and was painted over. Paint job is still in pretty good shape even after about 22 or 23 years and over 260,000 miles on the road. May have to get a hold of him and see if he would like to resign it. This bus is in the first and last pictures of the gathering at the caverns this year that are in the photo file on the yahoo group all bus nuts website. We will be at the Bus'N USA rally again this year if anyone wants to take a closer look

Lew,

You might be surprised.......some of the guys I listed are now on there own. Used to work for Setra, VanHool, Prevost, etc.... And people that were coming in for paint & body would say they only wanted these guys to touch there coaches. After a few years of this & being Prevost Certified (very limited on the people that can get this certification), they split off & are hungry & wanting to build a name for themselves.
It does'nt hurt to call & check it out.

Sorry, Niles, I'm not familiar with many painters. I only happen to know Mike and John because they painted Odyssey.
