Just a quick update..I'm at a HUSKY truck stop in Saskatoon..Left Eagle River, AK Sat. 2pm....A day late..Been driving 12-14 hours or so, a day...Bus has only burned a quart of oil so far...Roads were BAD in northern Yukon due to Frost heaves..had to go 45-50 miles an hour from AK border to after Destruction bay..got good gas milage though!.. Took the Drive Shaft off the toad..Very easy to do..Plugged the hole with thick plastic with a screw on hose clamp around it..All is good! I'll update more when I can...Take care and thanks all. |

Darn sean I'm about 4 mins away from the husky. I could have come over and washed your windows, or at least checked your tire pressures. |

A passing hello from another Saskatchewanian. Your journal talks about how flat Sask & Manitoba are - that's only true in the south. If you come further north both provinces are much more attractive. We've got lots of room for bus parking 3 miles east of Nipawin on #55 highway if anyone needs a spot to overnight. |

Thanks everyone!! Laura is rocking with her Pics and she'll have some more up tonight. Here's an update since Saskatoon...we made all the way across the Yellowhead 16 Highway to Winnepeg Manatoba, then down to Grand Forks, North Dakota before calling it a night Boondocked in the WalMart Parking lot. The cats had torn up my air mattress and we had to get another one and saw others boondocked there so we decided to stay as well. Yesterday morning we got a late start and had to stop off in South Dakota for a few hours of WiFi internet work at The Flying J. We ended up making it about 112 miles from the missouri border, in Iowa..Stopped at the KOA..Nice people..Showered, Laundry etc...Then got up today and made it down to Tulsa, OK where we met up with Michael Kraft, the bus guru behind MOTORCOACHU, and the man who has been instrumental in helping me get the bus in working order to get it down here...He checked out my bus...Said my engine sounded great! Everyone seems to say that, so I guess i'm lucky!..showed me some things, looked at the oil leaking from the Fast Idle cylinder, and basically looked over the bus etc..WE talked, went to dinner with Michael, his girlfriend cindy and her daughter...NICE NICE NICE NICE People...SERIOUS knowledge of buses and a great resource..Was great to finally meet up...Now we're actually staying in a hotel around the corner from Michael Kraft's yard because it was just too late to get to a campground and we're in the city of Tulsa..Plus it's really hot here and we wanted some AC, Showers, etc.... Thanks for all the comments and encouragement...it means a lot to us! Laura will post more pics in a few minutes. As for the trip...No reason to chicken out..This was my 6th time on the Alaska Hwy, and Laura's 7th..It's breathtaking and I highly recommend doing it. Get a Milepost and go! Tomorrow we are on to the Springfield Missouri area, then we pick up Laura's kids Monday morning and we head toward NJ...Peace! |

So we got in last night to Washington/Lebennon Township, NJ...All in all my journey was 11 days and over 6000 miles with NO PROBLEMS!!! I have an oil leak in the fast idle cylinder that connects to the Governer the throttle plate. It threw oil on my toad and forced me to have to put in 3 quarts of oil on the trip..My 6V71 sounds and runs very very good! Anyway that is the final update. Thanks for all the good vibes and kind words. |

Glad you had such great luck on the trip. Aren't you glad you didn't abandon that good old bus? Man, I use a quart every 500 miles. ("Use" means a combination of burning and leaking.) |

Sean - any bus (or vehicle/animal/spouse of any type) that will take you that far on the maiden voyage and doesn't leave you stranded - Is worth keeping (possibly even spendin some time and money on) - Niles |

yup..I agree..It seems I really ended up with a decent bus. Nothing major was ever really wrong with it exept the darn rear end which was fine when I bought it..It was just that no one knew how to fix it up in Alaska and the mechanics actually screwed it up!!! Cost me many thousands of dollars...But we'll forget about that! Michael Kraft has some beautifully prestine old MC8 and 9 Buses that are older or just as old as my bus and still in use with his tour companies.. My bus is actually kind of modern. Has intergral steering so it basically drives like a dream...Yea, it's a 6V71 and not a newer engine but that's alright..Yea, I am putting some cash and effort into this. I will have basic systems in, Blown in insualtion, Cedar interior, Solar panels, Motosat, Datastorm Satelite system, SW4024 inverter, nice battery bank Alternator charged when in motion, 2 big roof air units, several new penninsula windows including the drivers window, Low energy solar refridge, open floorplan, replace a few panels, paint her up, shine her up nice...etc, etc..will make a big trip to Elkhardt to the surplus places around the end of the summer to do major purchasing...All in all I hope to have basic systems in by the holidays!!! |

Hello Sean Mormelo, yes I know who owns the MCI5B, I do. sorry I missed you. I had my unit at the Husky as a staging area while I got ready for a run to Yellowknife NWT. The MCI5B is a 1973, roof raised 8 inches with front and back fiberglass caps, interior done by Prairie Yacht in Lacombe Alberta. 8V71 with 4 speed Spicer, have not owned for long so the unit is still teaching me. |
