OK, I got under the bus and the ground to the starter is a serpentined cable that runs from what I think is the oil cooler to the starter (attached with a clamp that wraps around the cable) and then the cable continues on to the bulkhead. My question is: Would it be better to run a a single cable from the starter to bulkhead and a second from the engine to bulkhead? Where is the best place to attach to engine?

I would definately change the one that wraps around the other one. That type of connection is not good at the best of time. Corrosion is the worst thing when it comes to battery cables. Any place on the block close to the starter that has a bolt of at least 1/2" dia and is into cast iron and not aluminum will do. Bill

Darell;

Get the cable run right, the PO on my bus, routed the ground cable to close to the battery cable, and I ended up melting the starter last weekend.
