Are they that much better than the 9er or 102's?

Hello Chuck.

That is not an MC12. Look at the roof cap.
That's an MC9 sharp corner, flat front, clearance lights mounted on the front face. The MC12 have a more aerodynamic rounded roof cap, with the clearance lights set into it.

I don't recall ever seeing a Greyhound Canada MC12. They bought MCI 96A3 up here. The two companies, Greyhound US and Greyhound Canada, don't get along, pretty much never have, and, even though both are now owned by Laidlaw, they still do their own things.

Greyhound Canada has done a lot of refitting to their MC9's, square headlights and new style square tailights have been added to some. Some of those buses have had their air beams done twice!

Two things to consider in the "high" price:

That was Canadian Dollars....at $1.20,
CDN$35,000 turns into US$29,100.

Did the price include a refurb of some sort?
I expect it must have. Drivetrain, interior, fresh tires, certified and plated or something all put together for a turn key price. I would be surprised at a Corporate donor paying good money for a clapped out, worn out, doggie bus without good reason. Our tax laws don't reward that sort of donation the way the US tax laws do.

However, on the MC12 front, one of those with the series 50 and Allsion World Transmission would make a really fine bus conversion. I drove one a couple of years ago, (IIRC, 1990 or 91 build date) and it is downright spooky driving an "old MCI" at 70 mph, and having the engine loafing in overdrive.

Great fuel economy too!

Where's the scream? your brain keeps wondering.

happy coaching!

Well, thanks to our transaction, I am now versed in currency conversion!

Aha - perhaps it's an MC9-S which I'd not heard of before. Happened on a site I only now discovered...

"The MC-12 is a bus which was built exclusively for Greyhound Lines Inc. It is easily confused with the MC-9S, as it also has the square headlights and a similar body. These coaches are found mainly in the USA, while the MC-9S is only found in Canada. A few Canadian coach companies and American correctional facilities have received a handful of MC12 units that were not delivered to GLI. The front cap has a different design than the MC-9 series, while the rear is similar to the A and C series. Most MC12's were powered by the Detroit Diesel 6V-92 engine, but due to the discontinuation of the 6V-92, later models were equipped with the DD Series 50 engine."

Don't know why I'm so interested in this stuff...
