the shifter slides in the gear shift tower are reversible, i turned them over, put in 2 new poppet bearings (3/8") and the shifter works like new and the slides are firmly set in neutral. the bearings and slides were well worn with the poppet bearings covered with flat spots and the indentations in the slides v shaped. turning them over is just like buying new ones. |

Thanks Bob. What are "poppet bearings"? |

the two shifter slides have a circular indentation that lines up with a 3/8" ball bearing, which is spring loaded, when in neutral. the bearings and springs fit in 2 holes in the uper housing. it gives a positive stoping point for neutral and lines up the slides so you can move from the 1-2 slide to the 3-4 slide and vice versa. mine was a little sloppy the indentations had worn from a circular hole to a oblong hole. because the slides are interchangeable they have indentations on both sides by flipping the slides over and changing positions i now have two new circular indentations. and i put in two new 3/8" ball bearings as the old ones had many flat spots. |

Great! I'm on it. While you are fooling around with the shifting, you might want to overhaul the rear bell crank assembly. Mine was worn so badly that the clevis pins had worn through the outer bearing races in the cranks. (Did you know that this is all caged needle bearings & rifle drilled so all points are lubed from the tube that goes down to the bottom of the bus?) Jim-Bob |
