It has been almost 3 years since I was in the computer business. A lot has changed as far as spyware and viruses. Came back from our trip and my computer was acting funny (hanging up after opening IE) I did the usual troubleshooting and found nothing. I used one of those free spyware scanners on the web and it found a couple of things.

I guess I am going to bite the bullet and buy some protection. Anybody have any recommendations for an effective program that does not hog system resources and that is affordable or free? Thanks in advance guys. Mike

Hello Mike.

Hey |@N! What is BNO using?

I'm no computer expert....

I use e-trust Pest Patrol by Computer Associates International.

They offer a free trial version, and if you purchase the full monty, it roots out even more stuff, if your computer is poluted.

It has some active protection features.

It found more stuff with their free one than the others I tried, so I gave 'em some cash. My kids surf all over the place....

You might want to use some other browser than IE that will block pop-ups too.

happy coaching!

I've been following Kim's newsletters for months now and she offers great tips, including several free sites to get rid of spam and all the other problems. I also purchased her 400+ tips and found several great hints and tips.

After you get it cleaned up, Firefox is a better/safer alternative to IE.

I use Spykiller by Webroot software.

Cleaned out a hornets nest that I got from a bad website and monitors the system full time without any apparent loss of horsepower.

You have to be careful with the "FREE" adware and spyware tools, They are sometimes worse than the original problem. Some are actually spyware too!

Being a computer Tech since 1976 I work on these problems daily. First go to www.trendmicro.com There they have a free spyware/virus checker online. Then go to Microsoft.com and download from them the spyware blocker they purchased from Gaint Software. This blocker is one of the best in the business, this is why MS stole it opps I mean purchased it. This is in MS BETA form however beta means that MS has not changed it much from the good company. When you finish getting these do a Microsoft baseline security check on your system Again this is free.

Now for the bad things... Spybot search and destroy is by far one of the best programs for ridding a system of known bots. This program is not for the wannabe tech it is a very strong program and if used incorrectly can completely mess up a system.

Not all spyware/adware reacted or are found by any one program. Many lawsuits and other problems have gotten a number of companies removed from most blockers. Due to this many programs are often required to clean a system that is badly infected.

Don't post these anywhere else - some are not for public use.. they are developed by friends of mine for techs who need them daily.

Registry Monitoring Tool:

RegProt can be a good option as RegistryProt is a 100% free, standalone, compact, low-level real time registry monitor and protector, that adds another dimension to Windows security and intrusion detection. By monitoring important locations and keys in the Windows system registry, RegistryProt will alert whenever a key is added or changed, and then give the option of accepting the key change, reverting back to the original key setting, or deleting the key.

Note: This is a "MUST HAVE" Utility in the Security Lineup.

System Sherlock Lite is another useful registry monitoring tool.

I use a combination of Adaware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy. When you install spybot make sure you enable the "TeaTimer", a silly name for blocking software, but it is effective. I also use Firefox.

BW,

Busnut.com's worldwide headquarters in the beautiful downtown uptown northeast Greater Toronto Area covers its assets with Norton AntiVirus, Spybot Search & Destroy and MS Win XP's very own Firewall.

But it seems so meagre now, after Evacuated in Mississippi's eloquent dissertation, above!

The only difference between a Mac and an Etch-A-Sketch, is
you have to shake the Etch-A-Sketch harder.

Chuck will love this, I'm sure.

IMHO, Micro$oft is now dancing with the Devil. It's once-wonderful Anti-spyware software now won't root out one of the most popular PITA programs, Gator, because they're in buyout talks... WITH THIS SPYWARE COMPANY.

Caused a furor last week. Details here: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1834607,00.asp

DON'T download their latest patches to it if you haven't already, because Gator now slips through. Hmmm...

Sigh.

Thank you all for the help. I ran all the scanners I could find and as Airless said each one found something different. Wahoo now my system is running great. I guess I will have to do this frequently. When I left the business email attachments were for the most part the big problem.

Even the best computer on the cutting edge of technology can have problems. Apple Macintosh! Under Mac OS 9 (classic) have very few viruses out there. (26 total) Reason.... Since only 5% of the computer users have enough sense to buy an Apple Macintosh, why make a virus program that can hurt a select few. Better to pick on the majority of the personal computer user. MicroSloth. I am required to use windblows at work. For me at home, I want something that works. Been an Apple user since Apple IIc. Now that Apple is using UNIX, we have our problems too. Most of the mainframe super computers are using UNIX. MacOS X is based on UNIX. There are Viruses and Trojan Horses out there to hurt Macintosh OS X. I know! No matter what computer you use. Or what operating system you need to have protection. People that make negative comments about Macintosh either have never worked with one since MacOS X or are parrot phrasing someone with an IQ of less than 47. Windows XP reminds me of Mac OS 7.5....... I would also tell you to buy a Macintosh. But GOD gave us free will. It is your choice. Just be safe and keep your software up to date.
