Hi all, I have a 1964 silver eagle w/8v71n I am not sure which way ti turn yet. any how My problem is the bus is a lemmon it smoke and is hard to start. with the batteries charge all the way up it is hard for the engine to turn over (rotate) I am thinking a starter what do you think? The other think is after I hook up my pickup to the bus so get it started, white smoke come out of both sides for about a minute and keeps comming out of the left side for about four to ten mins till it warms up or untill all of the misquitos are dead. and idead why only one ide would do this?

More likey than not your problem with the engine is low compression causing the smoke. If it is hard to turn over it could be the clyinders are scored. I bet the previous owner overheated the engine and caused all the problems, if not, it is just worn out.

A compression test on the worst smoking clyinders will tell you if the problem is low compression, or bad injectors (not likely).

Hard cranking, like water on the cylinder walls, giving that
white cloud as it burns off?

How long has it been sitting? Water in the air cleaner, maybe?
Water in the fuel? Check the easy *^%# first.

Possible also;

Probably collapsed paper element air cleaners, No air getting to engine. (emerg shutdown flapper stuck?)

Has not been run in a while and probably has contaminated fuel with high water content. Use Dri-Gas in large quantities, change fuel filters, check air filter(s).

Batteries may be too old and lost capacity to generate the 1,100 amps to crank starter properly.

Once oil changed, fuel treated/cleaned or replaced, filters all done. Be sure to use 40wt Oil and add 1 gallon of Lucas Oil additive to engine oil and Lucas fuel system cleaner in tank. See if that helps get things straightened out.

Just some ideas that have worked for me on old detroits that sat for years.

Located on the stack just above the blower on the top of the engine should be a solenoid mounted on the side that operates a Pin that rides in a groove on a round knoblike part that has a pin sticking out of it. The solenoid is tripped by the emergency shtdown switch or my someone fiddling around and releasing the plunger.
Try tristing on the knob with the pin sticking out of it. If it turns at all look to see if it will rotate to the grooved section where the solenoid plunger should lock it into position.

With the plunger in the groove, the trap is open and allows air to properly enter the blower. If it won't turn then use something like JB Blaster to free up the shafts and plunger until everything works free.

Both the solenoid and the trap are spring loaded, The flapper will close under spring pressure when the solenoid pin is retracted electrically or by hand.

Be sure to check your air filter and the intake pipe on it and make sure its not plugged or the element collapsed.

there is an emergency shut down on your left, under your elbow...if pushed,it trips the mousetrap & a flap covers the air intake right before air goes into the supercharger,it's kinda like setting a mousetrap when you reset it,one lever on front of tube revolves bach & the lever on the back catches it & sets it for the next time button is pushed,.....you have not given us much 'history'...on your bus,did it run good when you got it,have you had any children sitting in the drivers seat playing...I'll try to get I@N to post a picture of the lever on the front of the tube on my Eagle..

well I worked on the bus today and pulled the starter, to my di beleife the stater is 24v and the batteried are setup as 12v wired in parallel (12 volt), also broke the ground in the post internally, (I am a ninny) so i think that i should replace it with a 12 volt starter. I wil look into that. Here is some other information that I think that you need.

I bought the bus in san dieago last April-May time frame, I had the bus serviced at a near by truck stop and did the oil coolant and filled it with fresh fuel and new rubber. drove it to florida where I inished out the winter and then to maine. the whole tim it behave the way i stated above. I drove it about 5 thousand miles.

on the electrical side I had trouble in san dieago with the electrical charging system. I took the 3 phase alternator, regulator and diode pace to be tested a a local delco remy starter/ alternator shop all parts tested good exept tthe diad pack wich had a short and was repaird (diodes good) I asked what voltage the system was rated at and i was told 12 volt the regulator was set to 14.3 volts ( ihave a lot of batteries) now that is what is confusing me. since the coach was converted in 1980 could thy have just left in the 24v starter after converting the the system to 12 v.

thanks

John,

Maybe the starter was rebuilt for 12v and not marked.

Well if it were mine, I'd be trying to exchange it for a reman 12V. My bet is that running at 1/2 voltage has heat damaged stuff inside. (Way more heat than running 12V on 24V!)

I found a rebuilder here in maine, just down the road. he will have it for me in a weak. I asked himme to make it 12 v and give a condition report. There is a replacement starter he says that is smaller and lighter, and 4 time as powerful as the one I have. he had that one for about $300 the rebuild will cost $200. I will keep the old one for now and put it in and report back on what is going on.

I got the starter back and installed, The starter was setup for 24v on a 12 v system. I had it converted to 12v. I installed it and the bus came to life instantly. I love it when a things go right. I called he started guy and told him that I had a big problem, he said "what was the problem;. I yelled into the ohone that it works great, he was happy that I called.

Thanks for the help everyone who posed above.

Jack
