Anyone feel like attempting a repair on my old Perkins generator? Very little compression, water in oil, leaky water pump. Contacted Perkins....parts not available new anymore. Would start and run (after much priming and starter fluid), but smoke and oil blew out dipstick tube.....then eventually overheated. Replaced with too-small Honda gas genny......not happy! Perkins is out of coach right now. All wiring and fuel lines capped and intact.

Make me an offer. However, I would like to try to repair it first since it's already here, and would slide right back in and hook up. If I did sell the engine, I would probably want to keep the electric plant. email me if you want to see it.

Parts for all perkins are still available from their very beginning. Try someone that works on marine generators. They should have plenty of sources for perkins parts.

A few google searches might reward you with what you need to rebuild that engine.

TD try going to your local farm eq. dealer as perking were used in a lot of farm eq. they are a great engine, and some one like a gen set rental-repair outfit should be able to get you the parts, a lot of them though are just to damd laze to go to the trouble as there is not the huge big bucks in it for them so tey say that parts are no longer available.

Matt,

Perkins diesels were used on refrigerated semi trailers a few years ago, maybe more than a few!

A truck trailer dealer might be able to help or look for some old reefers for sale, they are usually pretty cheap. You could take the engine and keep the trailer for storage!

Come to think of it those rigs just bolt on to the trailer front and have huge blowere, they might be a lot better basement AC than some of the ones that have been used. Many operate only with the engine but some can use electricity, probably 240v though. The one I used to pull was a diesel only Perkins. Never had a minute of trouble with it.

Perkins was one of the best engines on the market as thousands of boat owners can attest to. It was a pity the company was purchased by an English company and everything moved to England. I know a lot of Perkins marine dealers got stuck with a lot of parts, but I l have no idea where they ended up.

Caterpillar now owns perkins name and parts supply. The small cat engines are perkins derived and design for the most part.

Its funny to see a yellow engine with Cat labels and the name perkins cast into the block.

I have it on good authority that Perkins engines suck , no matter who made them.

Who builds the ThermoKing and Carrier engines?

( Reefer truck units! )

I saw one of the little units with a Satoh/Mitsubishi 2 cylinder in it a while back.

But the BIG units have a serious engine that might be good for a generator and aux cooling system. Yes I know there's at least one out there in a certain Scenicruiser that has a Cat 3406 installed for main locomotion. Had a ThermoKing engine running an alternator.
