Yesterday was a long day (18 hrs), to travel three hundred miles by car and three hundred home with our new to us 4905 mostly convered bus. The 8V71 tried to over heat and a hose clamp broke loosing most of the antifreeze. with help from people in small town (about 50 people) we made it I would like to thank all the support I have received on The Board. My wife and I are looking forward to repairs and finishing living quarters of our 1974 GMC 4905. I know I'll have more questions, thank you all//// Larry D

Welcome to the wonderful world of bus nuts. Good luck with your new to you 4905. They were a great coach with probably the largest luggage bays ever made back then. Bill

Larry,

Let me second the welcome to being a bona fide Busnut.

Only 18 Hrs and 1 breakdown in three hours, not bad.

We all have our first trip stories and making it home in 24 hours is a success.

I am in the process of converting a 75-4905 and 90% of the time its a blast. Like anything that is used you will have plenty of things to do and check out , but it will be right when your done.

Since I don't know your level of experience, might I suggest checking out your brake pads, slack adjusters and air hose condition. Its one thing to have a problem moving, but a totally different panic when you can't stop.

And Block it up, a squished Busnut is an unhappy Busnut.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing about you progress.

Hi Larry, welcome to our crazy world.

If you added regular automotive antifreeze, you will need to change it to a low silicate antifreeze ASAP. Automotive stuff can cause severe damage to the cylinder liners on diesel engines. Same would be true if you added tap water instead of distilled water. Less of a problem with the water, but the antifreeze is pretty darn important.
