I would think your first stop would be your current auto insurance carrier. State Farm insured my bus with only a little fuss. I had to call MCI and find the average selling price for the shell when it was new and provide them two exterior corner shots (front and right side, rear and left side) plus interior photos and that was it. My agent took care of the rest. The price is going to vary by the coverage levels you select. You may want to go with a much higher liability level than your car as 15 tons of bus makes a bugger mess than two tons of car. Collision insurance will add a fair amount to the bill depending on the deductable level you select. Good luck! Craig - MC7 Oregon |

Progressive insurance for liability is about the least expensive that I've found. Collision premiums will vary greatly, and using the date of conversion rather than the year of the shell will be in your best interest. I don't have collision and likely won't be bothered with it. If it were a 50-100 grand thing, I'd be concerned, but for the 8k I paid and what little I'll be dumping into it, I'm sure I can fix or replace it for what a few years of premiums would be... aside from the deductible. Weigh it all up before you spend the $$$. |

You honestly don't have the options available to you that you would with a car. Progressive, GMAC (maybe have to do that thru Good Sam, I don't know). Some of the regulars and big names do it, some don't, and even the ones that do are very selective as to who, and even then, quite often only liability. Conversions, especially non-professional conversions, are an animal unto themselves from an insurance point of view. They tend to class them w/ the Titanic II. |

I've got to believe that his first step in this process would be to take one of you guys with him to get the insurance. The insurance agent will say "Hello" and he'll be stuck for an answer. At least that's what I surmise from the post and I am sorry if I laughed a bit. |

I wish I could get a vehicle registered without getting insurance first... Most states require it, I thought? That aside... Gele... If you're looking for collision insurance to cover damages to your own vehicle in event of an accident, you'll have a fairly tough time. It's an old vehicle and not many companies want to underwrite a policy to replace what they feel should have been made into a lamp long ago.. The premium you'll pay may not be worth it, in the long run... Now..... If you are financing it, the lender may be able to locate an insurance company for you, just to protect their own ass(ets). Just a "fire and theft" policy without the rest of the collision add-ins, may be a possibility. The "Good Sams Club" has an underwriter that offers a collision policy, but when I inquired, they wouldn't accept a home conversion, much less on a 1979 vehicle. If you don't already have liability insurance, Progressive is about the least expensive. Lotsa' luck! |

Lew, I believe Gel is from Arizona and Spanish is a very poopular second, or first, language there. I do not think he will find any problem communicating with an agent. Richard |

Good Sam, AKA GMAC has quit writing any bus over 20 years old. I just had to convert mine over to Progressive last month, (RVAmerica) and they required an appraisal by one of their "listed' appraisal firms. Cost of appraisal was $200.00 by ADP in Oregon, (lots of photos to them) and mainly a scam by a bunch of very unprofessional car-type appraisers. I was told by personnel at RVAmerica that it would be almost impossible to get the insurance unless I used one of the "their" firms. I'll quit now, 'cuz my blood pressure is starting back up. JayJay: I hear what ure saying about RV America and especially ADP in Oregon: A genuine couple of scam artists. My experience w/them back in '97. I told them to go to hell and went to State Farm where I was a 40 year customer and get better insurance for less money. |

It is funny you all mention ADP in OR. I used to work in their R&D office in Portland. Talk about unprofessional. I can guarantee working for them is worse than being a client. They remind me of Enron. |

Unprofessional is an understatement. I'm amazed that you admit to ever having been associated with them; fortunately you saw the light. When Aon, formerly A&A in a previous existance(they seem to change names with the changing breeze), chose them to "appraise" my Grumman, I inquired of ADP on the process they followed to determine value. Response: Search the Internet for like vehicles and seek advice of a well known contributor to these boards, a gentleman who certainly knows a lot about buses, especially well used ones, but is no more qualified to properly evaluate a conversion than I am, or my neighbor for that matter. That was enough for me to say "take a hike". |
