I have had continual problems with 6v92 and black smoke. According to my 6v92 book tune it, I did. Clean the blower screen, I tried but broke the first bolt off. I haven't gone any firther yet. Can anyone tell me how much boost I should show on the gauge. I don't believe the turbo is working correctly. No problem when running 70 and 75 on highway but lower rpm's are a big problem. I can't see the vehicle I am towing, almost. thanks for your help bob |

"tune it" consisted of doing what? Have you changed air filters? |

Is it a computer controlled engine - DDEC?? |

I adjustewd the exhaust valves, adjusted the injectors, set the rack, changed the air filter and fuel filters and it is not a computer controlled engine. It is a 1981 model 10 Eagle with a 740 allison tranny thanks |

Black smoke is too much fuel/unburned fuel. Check the injector size, the air intake ports for obstructions, etc. Lower rpms while towing? Why "lower rpms"? If you lug the thing, it'll smoke. The correct gear for the speed will allow the engine to run as it should. You shouldn't see "low rpms", unless you're in the wrong gear for the job. |

This is an automatic, which means it picks its gears, I suppose I could shift manually all of the time. If it shifts, no matter what gear, it will smoke excessivly until the rpm's build up. thanks anyway for your comeback |

I didn't mean to sound brash, Scott.. Sorry if that's the way it sounded... My MC9 smokes on take-off or hard accelleration. The previous owner told me there were oversized injectors installed. Probably right... So I feather the accellerator and eliminate most of the black smoke on take-off... It runs slick as snot otherwise.. And although mine is a 740 automatic, keeping it in third while under 55mph and shifting into a lower gear going up these terrible Florida grades, eliminates the black smoke while pulling along. Yeah, I'd personally reccommend manually shifting into a lower gear if that transmission is causing you to see low rpms while towing.. |

I had a similar situation with a newly rebuilt 6v92ta/740auto. It turned out my mechanic friend had installed the wrong turbo, one off of a 8v92 , you could not believe the smoke. I replaced it with the proper turbo and now the smoke thing is non existant except on full throttle from a stop which never happens. The fuel milage and overall performance also improved, check the numbers, good luck. |

I appreciate all of your info and sorry if igot a little out of sorts. I'm just stumped by this smoke and all of the mechanics around here that I have contacted are the same way. sorry!!!! Frank I am going to research the turbo option. I still think my problem is coming from the turbo. Still need to know what the turbo pulls or pushes whatever in pounds on the gauge thanks scott |
