I looked at an mc5 and it had rust under both the rear fenders and front fenders. Small holes all the way through the sheet metal. It also had some rust on several floor supports in 1st and 2nd luggage compartments. Are the luggage problems something mc5's are known for or was that most likely a maintenance problem (leak). Most of the compartment leakage looked like it was under the refrigerator, or sink area.
Is any rust in the fender wells a terminal case
for the bus?

Thanks Karl

Karl, some of the later model MC5's I looked at which hadn't been converted had compromised fender wells. They also had substantial damage i.e. rot to the wooden floors and to the steel framework in the surrounding areas. I don’t think you can avoid the necessity of addressing the problem should the coach have holes in the wheel wells. Every raining day your traveling the wheels will be soaking the entire area penetrating water wherever it can.

It's isn't terminal, but similar leaks in the wheelwells of my MCI-9 brought alot of rust to the top of the Air Beams. I'd certainly want to lift the floor boards and clean, inspect and repair.

Those little holes permit lots of very fine silt to get inside and it piles up over everywhere. I had damp mud 4" deep in spots. This moisture retention sure speeds up corrosion.

Evem though it's "below" floor level, there's lots of mild steel structure in the wheelwell area The SS was fine, the mild steel was throw away.

All but air beams easy to repair once it's open

Thanks for the response guys. How big of a job is it to pull damaged flooring. Is it screwed down in 4 x 8 sheets? The rot damage that I saw was at the front of the second compartment(under the fridge). I did see quite a
bit of rust on the floor supports in the front compartment right where it meets the edge of the bus, but the wood flooring still looked ok. Does that sound like its from the bus leaking at the fender wells or lack of maintenance of conversion.
