I looked at a bus that had an 8v71 that had a very uneven idle especially when cold. It got better once it warmed up but still idled no where near as even as my 8v92ta. It also smoked alot, owner told me it didn't stop smoking until it was up to full operating temp. Trying to find out if this is normal for an 8v71 or is this engine showing lots of wear, my 8v92 smokes for a few seconds and thats it. |

Sound like it's blowing alot of oil past the rings. Since oil is essentially fuel, the effect of oil blowing past the rings is basically the same as adding fuel, which will make the RMP rise. Ross |

Karl, If the bus has been started and idled many times or for long periods of time it will do the same thing. Only to find out for sure is take it out on a long drive of at least a couple of hundred miles and see if it improves or stops. If it improves try a couple more hundred miles. Before you do this make sure it has the proper straight 40 weight oil. You can not use multi viscosity oil in the DD two strokes. Richard |

Hello Karl. DD 2 strokes are pretty much all the same, regardless of which family, 53, 71 or 92 on this point. If it runs smooth and smokeless, it's that kind. If it runs rough and smokes, it's the other kind, the kind that sucks your wallet empty. Never mind that "when it warms up" line from a seller. It either runs great right there or discount the engine heavily in your offer. Even if a long drive clears it, you have to worry about how that present owner has been treating it to get into that condition, and just how short a time it takes to get like that again. Also, and perhaps of most importance: Your neighbours probably won't like the diesel fired mosquito fogger.... happy coaching! buswarrior |

Re: "It also smoked alot" You didn't tell anyone what color smoke it is. Without knowing that, no-one can tell you what could possibly be wrong. |

Good point John, I failed to relay that it is oil smoke (blue) not fuel smoke (black). The vehicle has been stationary for quite a while although the owner says he starts it monthly I have trouble believing this. The bus has only had 8k miles put on it over a five year period and it has been sitting for the last 2 years. Based on comments from other 8v71 owners and the fact that this bus smoked alot for a solid 20 minutes after starting and running on high idle I'm concerned that the engine has some issues. The only vehicles that I have seen smoke as much as this one are old dump trunks I see running around that look like they have a blue fogger coming out the stack. Thanks Karl |

Karl, I just had a similar problem but the smoke was more white than blue. It was also an 8v71 engine. It smoked at idle and was running rough at idle. It cleared up at highway speeds. It wound up being some bent and worn valves on one of the heads. I had a shop replace the head and it is fine now. It was not cheap to fix. About $1600. There was a little extra work done also but it was minor. My 2cents worth. Jim 4106 CA |
