I'd like to be able to gauge the engine temp of my Onan Marquis 7000 from the drivers seat..... Anyone done this? I am thinking that monitoring the engine oil temp might be the way......sending unit and gauge? Another/Better way?

Thanks Chuck Lott, Douglasville Ga.

Use a CHT guage (cylinder head temp). This is the most common way to guage an air cooled engine. They can be bought at places like Aircraft Spruce or any other outfit that sells airplane parts geared towards experimental. Any outfit that has a wide selectyion of guages in general should also have them. They consist of a guage and sensor ring that mounts under the spark plug.

Chuck,

Do a Google search for "cht gauge". You'll get a large number hits. I will be needing one also.

Another option. I purchased the alarm system that Jim Shepard (RV Safety Systems)sells. This gauge monitors the air temp in both the generator and engine compartment, setting off an alarm if the temperature reaches a set point. Actually 2 set points, the lower setting is adjustable and should be set slightly higher than the normal temperature in the compartment. The second or higher setting is preset and is before the temperature that would allow combustibles to start burning. It can also be connected to an automatic fire suppression system. It gives a constant digital readout of the temeratures on the dash mounted display. Just another option.
PS: The air temp in our gas Onan compartment, old condensor compartment with most of the door sealed off with insulation, runs about 104-110.

Oil temp is the easiest way to go. Cyl head gages are expensive and not much good unless you have one on each cyl.

The downside of oil temp is that it is slow to react, cyl head temp is instantenous.

In either case you need to know Onan temp range and max for each one.
