I have been running my vw rabbit and my farm tractor on vegie since march. i have about 3000 miles on the rabbit and i have bailed over 200 acres of hay with the tractor. Now i have added a 60 gallon tank with remote switch over valve and have started running my Eagle on it. I have ran about 500 miles on vegie in the bus and so var everything is good! i am planning on building a 200 gallon tank for the oil and keeping my diesel tanks for diesel or oil. A total of 350 gallons will get me a long ways for free. Or almost free.

Ethan, what is your source of supply for all this used veggie? Are you "refining" yourself? How much is "almost free"? I ran over a 1000mi. just last month, and I didn't really go anywhere, so where do I carry all this french fry oil if I really want to go somewhere.

Out of curiousity, has anybody been harassed from running veggie oil? I was thinking that since there's no road tax on it that there might be some issues.

I know this is not a political forum, but David's question brings out the worst in me. Being a cynic when it comes from government they will likely screw this one up somehow.

To encourage the use of renewable resources like veggie oil there should be no tax whatsoever, but government being what it is there will undoubtedly be taxes nationally and additives for CA emissions.

James M, I started by talking to a freind that owns some gas stations and a restraunt about getting all of his oil. I found that i needed more and started talking to other people i know with restraunts. I now have a problem of having more oil then i can burn. The local sonic called me a couple of weeks ago to see if i would take thers too. A chinese restrant called me today! I have it figured that i will be gathering over 500 gallons a month now. I run it in my rabbit, bus, tractor, my dads tractor, And will soon be using it in my dump truck and cat977 loader. I am still working on the filtering process. When i pick it up I pump it down to 100 microns and when i transfer it to my 500 gallon storage tank at home I take it down to 10 microns. Right now I use a 10 micron spin on fuel filter and it will last for 160-200 gallons. the filter costs me $7 so it isnt realy to bad.

Hey Ethan

We have been running our generator almost soley on WVO for over 2 years, and have run the detroit on a couple of occasions. Plan on installing a 105 gallon tank for the vege and an electric switch valve to (mix) the vege with the diesel.

(someone will) Correct me if I am wrong, but from what I have read, an additive is not taxed as road fuel. (STP etc.)

Good luck and keep us informed.

Since technically the road tax on fuel is to be collected when the fuel is sold, you could argue that since you acquired the oil for free, it was never sold and as such never subject to road tax collection.

Do let us know what kind of engine you are using for this experiment and what the results are. To date there have been no long term tests of WVO in the Detroit 2 cycle engines and if it works without problems I'd probably add a few tanks to my bus as well.

"Fuel Tax" is the state, local or federal tax which is placed on fuels which are listed or defined in the legislation authorizing the tax - barring these definitions/restrictions the government could require you to meter the volume air entering your intake as it too is fuel for the mill - I hope I haven't given them any ideas - I am unaware of any federal tax on WVO used as fuel - it is my understanding that some states like WA tax all fuels, while some states offer tax incentives for alternative fuels, and local taxes are all over the place

Bill not only uses WVO for fuel - but has the most unique Eagle front end in the world

This morning the price of diesel was $3.10 a gallon in the Los Angles area and no end in sight as yet. That’s almost double what it was a year ago! Many busnuts have spent years converting a coach into a motor home only to find they have a portable guesthouse parked in their driveway. Not exactly what they had in mind when they started planning for their lifestyle.

What to do now? Well you can sell that dream, or you can consider converting your fuel system to a proven alternative fuel source. Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) has been used by many for years successfully to power diesel motors. Currently it costs approximately 10 to .25 cents per gallon to prepare WVO as a fuel ready to burn, with no loss of power or mileage.

Yes, it cost a few dollars to convert your system to properly run WVO, but for the do-it-yourself gang its not expensive considering the payback. In terms of the cost of a diesel genset or a/c system its about the same, and just about as easy to install. The resell value goes up with a finished system as well. Bus conversions are going cheaper as more and more buyers consider the cost of fuel to operate them, many have lost 50% or more value in the past year alone making your investment a poor choice in terms of “what if I am forced to sell”.

Now if you’re the type that is afraid to get your hands dirty collecting and filtering WVO, this may not be for you. I change my own oil rather than pay the local truck shop to do it and get my hands dirty in the process and emptying the black tank isn’t really a thrill. WVO stores for years without degrading and can be collected in your spare time for that long trip or two you make each year.

While WVO is not currently taxed for road use, it might be in the future but it will still be cheaper than Dino Diesel fuel. How cheap is it? Well I collected and filtered 150 gallon a few weeks ago at a cost of .18 cents per gallon, and yes that included the cost of going after it. The only consumable was the filter elements. 150 gallon will get me approximately 1,200 miles of driving and save me $438.00 at today’s LA price for diesel, It don’t take long to pay for the conversion at this rate. Can yoy afford to “do it your way”? Wouldn’t it be great to take that trip to visit friends or family, or attend a rally instead of camping in the driveway this weekend?

Ethan,

May I ask... how did you do the WVO conversions on your many vehicles? Did you kit them or did you make your own conversions.

We have been holding-off on starting/completing our bus project because of the fuel prices (we have the bus). We're thinking that if we should be so lucky, and take a long trip... just one tank of WVO fuel will make each trip's fuel budget "pill" much easier to swallow.

Thanks
Rich
