I am thinking of replacing my 5kw Koehler Conf. V generator with a Generac Quietpact 75D. Koehler still runs good, looking to update since it is likely half way through its life and it is a little small for me. Does anyone want it?

If there are any old threads please let me know.

Does anyone know-

What the life of the generator or the 75D engine is?
How does that compare to the gasoline version of the 75G?
How does the 75d start in the cold?
Is there a good reason to buy something else?
Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks and have a great day.

I am not familiar with the current models of Generac, but several years ago, when I was in the genset business, they had one of the lowest ratings of any product on the market. One of the particularly annoying problems was their warrenty required the unit to be operated on a monthly basis, or the warrenty was void. There may be something in the archives documenting this.
One good place to look for a replacement genset is WRICO in the northwest.

This is only my own experience with Generac. Due to the nature of my employment I use many generators at communication sites. I have Onan, Atlas Copco, Coleman, Kohler and Generac. The three Generac propane fired generators that I use are by far the worst units I have encountered. They have failed consistantly since they were new.

I have had no support from Generac themselves. I was even told they were installed improperly. They were installed by Generac factory trained technicians!!!!

I haven't had one problem with the other units I've mentioned.

Do a forum search for "Generac" and you'll largely hear negatives like those posted above. "Cheap Chinese junk" comes to mind.

Because of budget constraints, I bought a used Yamaha diesel jobsite genny for $2500. It's a water-cooled, two-cylinder Kubota engine, 6.5kW. I'm presently shoehorning it into a bay. Seems like a solidly- built genny with good electronics (it didn't vary by more than a volt under wildly changing loads). I think it's a lot better choice for me than the gas, air-cooled Onan I replaced.

The only rub is it's louder than I'd like (3000 rpm), but I'll use it mostly for OTR A/C, probably less than 200 hrs. annually. We'll see how it goes.

Good luck!

Hello Geobus.

I'll lend a voice to very bad experiences with a pair of 8K diesel Generac's in a mobile command unit.

In 2000 hours of operation over 13 years, (1991 to 2004) there was no electrical part of either of them that has not been rebuilt at least twice.

IMHO, the generator heads were complete garbage.

Thank goodness the coach designers put in two of these POS, because one of them was always down.

The little diesel motors broke their rad supports and the fan ate the rads, the starters both were replaced at least once.

The fuses in the engine control circuits would blow for no reason.

I wouldn't give one of these to an enemy, and wouldn't recommend them to a friend.

I'm scarred for life....

happy coaching!

Six years ago i bought a generac from costco, ran it two or three hours the first day with no problems. The second day i fired it up and after warming it up and 1 minute after plugging into it i thought it sounded wrong so i shut it down and checked it out....all seemed well so i fired it back up and it immediately seized up. Took it back to costco and they said that they had already had 3 others brought back that day that had done the same thing. They asked me if i wanted a replacement or my money back.......i took the money! I would not take one of those again even if someody gave it to me for free.

GeoBus -

Over the years I've been monitoring this and other bus bbs's, the general consensus is that Generac's make great boat anchors, especially when they're brand new out of the box.

FWIW. . .

Brian, 3000 rpm typically indicates 50 hertz output, unless the unit is belt driven and the alternator is being speeded up to 3600 rpm. You might want to check your output frequency.

Richard, yes it's is a belt-driven unit to 3600rpm/ 60Hz. This does add another item to maintain, I know. There's two belts on the alt. and one for the water pump... and so I'll have to carry spares.

Thanks,
Brian

Well, I guess Generac is a dead horse. What are opinions regarding the Onan Quite Diesel 7500?

I don't know but I think I am missing something here.

Didn't you say you HAD in posession a KOHLER generator??? I thought I understood that they were a pretty good unit. Why are you getting rid of it and looking into Generac Junk?? A poorly running KOHLER is much better than a new Generac anytime.

Onans are reliable but maintenance and repair are expensive. I don't beleive there is a lot you can do to repair them, the parts can only be had by Onan. Not to say that Onan is a bad gensset, by far many say the Onan is great. I have one myself. But they do have that little quirk, then again, I think they all do. Just the Generac has a few more quirks than we want to deal with.

GeoBus, I just replaced a Generag with a 6.5Kw Onan. My opinion I wouldn't touch another Genejunk

OK OK I got the idea-NO Generac.

With this I kind of feedback, I am clearly not going to get a Generac.

I am now thinking about one of three other units.

Please my new thread about Onan, PowerTech, or Wrico.

Thanks again for all of the feedback.
