First off, I want to thank EVERYONE who has shared their knowledge freely with me. It has been of a tremendous help. My new focus is the A/C. Here is what I can tell you. (78 GMC RTS II, 8V71) Now, I have a GIANT Trane 4 cylinder compressor for A/C. It appears to be driven off the transmission??? It has a big cover over the belt going to it, but best I can tell, that is where it is going.

What I need to know is, if a few of you can take an educated guess about what freon I need for recharging the unit. I am thinking that it since it is a Trane compressor, that it probably takes R-22. How likely is that to be correct. (I can tell you that 2 certified ASE mechanics told me that there was no way that the nozzles for filling or recharging were large enough to be R-134A. So, that leaves me with R-12 and R-22. Since I do not KNOW of any other vehicular applications for a Trane compressor, I am guessing R-22...???? Anyone else with an RTS with the giant 4 cyl. Trane compressor??? Thanks again!

It is most likely R22. It may also be a FrigaKing compressor, which is very similar in appearance to the Trane, but nevertheless, not a Trane. Basically, your system is a Reefer Box system adapted to a/c use and using the tranny PTO as motive power rather than a Kubota. If there are no visible clues down below, go up top to the condenser/evaporator section and look for a charging tag or other indicator. If u can get a view of the expansion valve inside the evaporator case (usually hard to get to in pkg. type units) the color of the power head will tell u. Green is 22, Yellow is 12. The letter designation for each refrigerant is F for 12 and V for 22--that will be the first character in the expansion valve model #.

Another indicator is finding out what the head pressure cut-out is set for. About 300-325 for 12 and 425-450 for 22. If u have the small in line pressure controllers, that may be hard to determine. If u have a Ranco or other dual controller on the compressor you should be able to read the settings. Most transits of the era used R22, but there again, not all. Although the RTS is mostly a GM bus in name and engineering only, GM was using R22 in the 4905 at the time. I'm venturing that u have R22 system, but I'm not guaranteeing it. If so, u are going to need 15-16# for a total recharge.

Roy have you joined the RTS Bus Nuts group. These types of questions on the RTS is exactly what you'd find there.

It says Trane on it in several places. I just joined that group as well, but I still like this group no matter what. I don't think I've been steered wrong in ANY way here. But, I am sure game to be a part of the other one too! In fact I am reading there now! The oil in that sucker looks brand new through the little window. I was so close to junking it, but after seeing that, I think it may be worth a charge.

Are there any big events for getting together like say Bikeweek for Harley's & other bikes, Oshkosh for ultralights and other aircraft etc? If so, when are they? I would really like to be a part of them if they exist. Thanks

There are 3 big ralllies. Bus Conversions Magazine holds one in Arizona in April, Busin' USA in held in Oregon in July, and we host the Bussin' rallies in Arcadia, Florida. This year, Bussin' 2006 will be held from Thursday, December 29 through Sunday, January 1 with early arrivals OK beginning on Monday, December 26. We hope to have the web page up on this site in September. Jack

For those of you into Eagles, there is an Eagle rally in Omaha next month (Sept 12-15). It's Sponsored by the Eagle International chapter of the FMCA. Email me if you wish to have more info.

Roy, your A/C compressor is called a Trane "GB".
It is belt driven off of the transmission PTO shaft. You want the belt tension to be between
180-200 pounds (when checked with a belt tension guage). This is the common setup found on the RTS.
Best of luck with your bus.
