Even though I live in upstate New York and put up with harsh winters, my personal favorite place is Tennessee. Visited there during various seasons and love it. They also have the friendlist people I have even met.

I guess it all depends on your likes and dislikes.

The "Places Rated Almanac" gives a nice reference to that. It describes yearlong weather temps, snow and rainfall. I havent looked at one in years, so I dont know their rankings now. I know Houston was ranked high...right now I cant imagine how that is possible...it is unbearably hot and humid !!

If mild weather is what you are looing for NW Oregon is good. During the winter months it rains a lot (50+- in.) The elevation is low so it does not get all that cold. The 4 years I lived there we had maybe 4 thudnerstorms and not many more snow storms. I actually missed the storms we get here in Colorado.

Houston??? I agree with you on that. I was helping my brother-in-law in his yard one time and the temp was about 82 and 100% humidity or there abouts. I thought I was going to pass out. It felt miserable.

On the other hand, I was helping construct a church building in Laredo and it was 105. I had no problem working in the dry heat. That humidity in Houston is unbearable. Yuk!

I hear Santa Fe NM is pretty nice year round. Never been to Tennessee, but have heard those folks are indeed friendly. Like the bluegrass and folksy music, too.

IMHO, the thread as started would be inclusive of heat, cold, dry and....HUMID....:-) :-(
I lived in Colorado, several different places within that state, and moved to the southern New Mexcio area in 1996 to get away from the 6 month winters of Gunnison, Colorado.

This year has been a real bear in southern NM....but I understand it is elsewhere as well. We had several weeks of 100+ weather....not humid. Now we are having several weeks of the monsoon that was due in July, but never happened. I live about 2 miles from the Rio Grande River, in the valley, consequently humidity....much higher this year than I care for.

All to say that we, too, are looking for a new spot. NM is great for Veterans, has good tax structure and a bunch of amenities so we hope to stay in the state. Santa Fe can be awful in the winter. Lots of humidity which makes cold colder, AND very high cost of living. (Hollywood took up residence) We are considering Albuquerque area as a possibility, (it has a VA Hospital) or possibly even farther west toward the Flagstaff,AZ area... but AZ has pretty high vehicle taxes, etc. Been a couple of years considering all this, but no final decision.

Tucson is hot, Phoenix is worse, Deming, NM is about like Las Cruces. Alamogordo, NM has some possibilities as they are relatively close (1.5 hours) to a VA Hospital in El Paso, and.....at the base of a beautiful range of mountains (Sacramento), with Cloudcroft just 18 miles away at 9200 feet. We have owned property there and it is not bad in the winter...great in the summer...Alamo is very hot in summer.

Who knows....I'm open to any helpful suggestions. :-) :-)

We are looking at Arkansas right now. I know it gets hot/humid in the summer. I like the low taxes and affordable property. Since my wife is an avid gardner the climate will be great.

As Mr Bishop said except for the heat this summer NM is great. We have wintered and sometimes summered here too since 94 . We're in Elephant Butte NM, $135 a month including wifi and cable tv, a very cheap place to winter, 35 space park, normal amenities etc. Great big lake and park here with beach driving allowed and lots of stuff to do within easy drives as long as you like outdoor stuff;). Also Artesian hot springs in Truth or Consequences 3 mi away. Only 1 hr to Las Cruses and 90 min to Abq...

Ok, I'll contribute, but I am biased. Spend summers on WA coast and winters in CA desert. Pretty good, yes? However, if I had to pick one place only for year round living, it would have to be somewhere in inland southern Oregon, like Klamath Falls. Don't tell the locals I tipped you off.
