Ok, after drilling out a few rivets (very few), I've come to the realization that drilling them out is merely a hazing technique of the "upper classmen" convertors.

There has got to be a better way!!!

It depends on where you're removing them. On the interior panels on my MC-8, I used an air chisel. I used the point bit to pop in the centers and then knocked 'em out with the chisel bit. It doesn't look good and it's loud as hell, but it's a fairly quick way to remove a lot of them. I used a 4" disc grinder to grind off the heads and then drilled out the rest on exterior aluminum rivets.

I used a sharp, very old wood chisel to pop off the head and then tapped the shank out with a punch slightly smaller in diameter than the shank. I did about 3000 like this and it was faster than drilling and neater than the air chisel approach. Some that would not come out I drilled through part way and then popped out.

Dug,

The guys have given you great advice, if you are not saving the panel! The only way to save the panel is to drill. Air chisels, grinders, hand chisels, etc.... will mar the panel. Not sure how the hand chisel will work on Stainless rivets (twice as tough as the aluminum rivets)
