Just started using my bus on trips, this weekend while drive home, the 65 gal black tank was about half full, it is taller than wider. I have a grey tank. On one side of the bus the shower empties into the grey tank and there is a vent pipe through the roof that the shower is hooked to,also have a vent pipe from the grey tank hooked to the vent thru the roof. On the other side the toilet dumps into the black tank and that direct dump is vented to a second vent pipe to the roof. there is a separate vent pipe from the black tank hooked to the second roof vent. Finally, the bathroom sink dumps into the grey tank but is also hooked to the second (black tank) vent. The second vent exits the roof about 6 feet in front of the rear air and in line with the rear air. I think it is coming in the rear air, but it comes in whether the air is on or off. I have traps on the shower and sink.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to fix.

Check and make sure the all sink and shower traps are full and any other device that may drain into the tanks. Then check the internal vent/overflow on the toilet itself. A little half inch hole up the back of the toilet above the normal water line. (Also make sure there is water in the toilet itself). That was where my problem came from. I ended up sealing it with Silicone and it stopped the odor.

If they are like mine, your roof air conditioners do not exchange air from the outside to the interior. They only cool and recirculate what's in the coach.

It's not necessary to plug the vent holes in the back of the bowl. Just fill the bowl with water until it goes into the holes. The water will seal the vents because of the trap built into the vents. Just remember to do this occasionally because the water will evaporate and the smell will return. And do it if you remove the toilet and lay it on its side.

I think the bathroom sink is a likely suspect. Air flying past the vent on the roof can create a fair amount of pressure. Could be forcing air past the water in the trap. Try plugging it with a stopper while underway as a test.

I also am worried about the "drains into gray tank but uses the black tank vent" arrangement. Not sure why, but this seems to be asking for stink problems.

And last but not least, don't be so sure it's a blacktank smell. Gray tank can get pretty foul from kitchen sink. On my sticks N staples unit, if the gray tank is too full and the road too bumpy, I sometimes get gray water bouncing up into the shower past the shower trap. If you smelled it you would bet me $20 bucks it was black tank smell.

What type of toilet do you have, I have a sealand, if you have a sealand where is the hole exactly.

Do not remember the brand, but the small hole, about 1/2 inch in diameter, is in the rear of the bowl, about three inches above the normal water line. I think it is primarily an overflow line in case the foot valve sticks and keeps running.
Just remembered one other possible source of odor. I had a dish washer that I never used and found I had to add water to the unit occassionally to keep the trap full.
I really do not think there is enough vacuum to suck odor thru a full trap, but if the vehicle sits for long periods of time, the traps will dry up. Some people use a small amount of vegetable oil in traps to keep them from drying out.

You need some type of ventri on the vent pipes on the roof. A simple pvc T mounted so the air blow thru as you are driving down the road will create a negitive pressure in the tank. There are RV ones that work a little better.

John, it is usual to have some air leakage around the door, and new drivers sometimes leave the toll window or an overhead vent open in the front of the bus.

In our coach, there is a high vacuum present just aft of the door hinge which decreases as you move further aft. Somewhere around ten feet from the front of the bus, the pressure goes positive with respect to the interior of the bus.

We found that any opening aft brought air inside and any opening forward of ten foot from the front let air out.

We found that eliminating unintended airflow eliminated odor problems. Then, I figured out how to get some ram air through the defroster, which helped make sure that we didn't draw air in through the rear of the coach.

You may well find it necessary to take some of the steps that I mentioned above.

Good luck with the sniff tests.

When I was in middle school the meanest witch of all the girls was sitting in the back of the bus right up against the window. The driver was tired of her crap so he told me to look back at her. He then spit out his window and she screamed and said a bird craped on her. It was a good lesson for me about how the air moved around the bus. It was also nice to see her hair with spit in it. eh eh eh
