Well, I finally get some friendly revenge against my whiny next door neighbor... the one that always calls my landlord if I don't mow my lawn as often as she does. I know she's lovin' that 40' bus parked right out front.... I smile as I start it up and it proceeds to smoke up the the entire neighborhood for a couple minutes until it warms up. Poor turd 8v71, it's probably about worn out, but it sure does run good! It does lack some power... I'd hate to see it with the 4.10 gear. While everyone is reading my little post, can someone tell me where I might acquire the 4.53 or the 4.10 gearing for my RTS???? I keep reading about it everywhere, but I don't know where to find them. Thanks |

Just be careful that "whiny next door neighbor" doesn't call the local politicians and start a move for legislation against parking of any large vehicle on private property, using your bus for the example. Brevard County, Florida, is attempting such a move. It's nasty. |

I agree with John. My neighbors complained about my bus. It's in my back yard, behind a gate. I don't start it when they're out. I keep the work noise quiet when possible. It didn't matter; they didn't like the sight of any of it over the fence. It's too bad, because my neighbors aren't normally "whiny"; we used to be good friends. Now we don't speak. |

One thing you can do if you have electricity nearby.... you could use a block heater to pre-warm it up before starting if you know ahead of time when you are planning on running it. Unless the engine is worn out, it will reduce a lot of the smoke on start-up.John's right;unfriendly neighbors can be a real problem when you have "AN OLD BUS" on your property. |

I had neighbors spoke in my behalf when confronted by zoning. It is best to get along with your neighbors rather than get them miffed. I had a variance hearing to keep my bus on property. I did not know Pete had a Mule? Why kick it? I'm sure if he did have a mule, He'd let Two Mutts kiss it! But then it would eventually become a sexual thing. Pete, I too belong to DAM, Muddas Against Dyslexia! |

Dang guys, didn't mean to start a war.... Just wanted to post a little about my neighbors. No one has said anything yet. Maybe no one cares. My other next door neighbors are younger like me and I don't think they care at all. In fact, when I pulled up the first time and got off the bus, he come over and called me Kenny Rogers... LOL (Called me this because Kenny's in law's live in town here locally, and his bus is parked over at their place a pretty good bit.) Anyways, cheer up everyone! |

IIRC the 4.10 gears out of a FLX Metro will work in an RTS. Most of the Metros in the TriMet (Portland OR)fleet have 4.56 gears in them. They let go of an older bus occasionally on Ebay. |

Mike, are you suggesting I buy the entire bus for the gearing? Is there no other easy way to obtain them? By John MC9 (66.217.106.34) on Thursday, August 25, 2005 - 10:45 pm: Edit Post Oh for cryin' out loud, Roy.......... *^$%$# LOL John. |

Roy, It's a sure bet that if you want to change the gears it will cost more than you probably paid for the whole bus. Rockwell ring & pinion gear sets are expensive unless you can find one cheap. Last one I had done for a guy was $3,500 installed by a truck shop. The set cost $2,150 and the rest labor and small parts. Of course that was done at a truck shop and they hated working on buses so they charged big bucks. A 4.56 will only get you about 64 mph or 70 downhill with a tail wind. If your bus smokes as bad as you say, You probably don't have enough residual horsepower in that worn out engine to pull it along with 4.11 gears, ( Yes I said 4.11 ) Not 4.10, The last ones I got were 4.11 stamped on the gears. Just about everyone makes their first big mistake with the first bus they buy when they discover that some major component is shot when they try to take it home. Don't worry you are just starting with the long list of mistakes that will occur whether they are your doing or someone elses. Few understand what can go wrong with that $35,000+ powertrain in the back of that $5,000 used bus especially after it breaks down. In other words, After you rebuild all of the chassis, engine, transmission, running gear and tweak everything you still have a $5,000 bus. Ok Guys, I have my fire suit on and extinguisher handy.. go for it.. |

Hey Roy, Check some transit auctions. I think it was a year ago that a transit district was letting go of a few 4.56 or 4.10 flex rear ends. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy the whole bus instead of just the part you need. |

getting back to your original question - found this post on the yahoo rts-bus-nuts-board The Rockwell/Meritor number for a 4:10 R&P to fit the RTS is A38152. Bayshore Truck and Equipment in South San Francisco can get you one for around $2000.00, I don't remember the exact price. You will also need a new pinion seal, and you won't know until you get it apart if it will need bearings, thrust washers and spider gears. If you can't get a good deal where you are Steve at Bayshore can ship one to you-- their number is 650 871-9193. Also a post from mopar jeff... I purchased my 4.10's from TGI (Truck Gears Inc.) last December. They were shipped from California to my house in about 5 days. The gear set was $2049.80, plus $65 for shipping. The price may be higher now that it's 2004. The guy to ask for is Greg. They were nice to deal with. Phone # is562)594-6681. 4:10 Rockwell A-38152-1 gear set . Pete RtS/Daytona p.s. Nike at Ninco often has flx 4.55s (but you need to swap the gears out of the FLX pumpkin or you could try drilling the hole in the boss to mount the RTS e-brake - the cases are the same except for that big hole for the ebrake mounting |
