Larry,

Assuming the studs are approximately 1/2" nominal, the key is to drill through the center of the stud with about a 3/8's drill to a depth close to the far side of the spindle flange that supports the studs. (you don't want to drill all the way thru as you'll see later).

Grind off the mushroomed portion of the broken end of the stud first, then center punch. It might help to first drill with a 1/8" drill as a pilot. It's easier to ensure you remain very close to the center of the stud and will make it easier to drill since you don't have to overcome the resistance of the center point of a standard cut drill.

Then get a 1/4" punch or so. Support the drum on the backside with a pipe or socket larger than the head of the stud. It's best to press itout with a hydraulic press, but I'm guessing if you had one, you wouldn't be in your present situation. So drive it out with a small sledge.

The punch will stretch and shrink the outside diameter (Poisson's Ratio) and ease its removal

Take the hubs off and take them to a trailer shop and they can remove them and replace them for you.

Or if the axles are a dexter or similar the hubs are not that expensive to replace. Be sure to replace the bearings and seals and repack them properly.

Forget trying to remove them with the hubs still on the trailer.

If the axle is siezed up, buy a new axle, u-bolts, hangers and bushings. Once siezed the stubs are pretty much shot.

You should have used a torch to heat them up cherry red before you beat them out. cut the mushroom ends off the end and heat them up real good and then take the the sledge and pretend there Bin laden. and they should pop right out. good luck.
