Anyone know the fuel usage on a 15KW diesel Kubota genset at full and half load?

My 10 kw with a D950 engine uses .5 gal/hr under full load @ 2,200 rpm.

My Kubota V1902 1861cc 15KW advertises .8 GPH fully loaded.
But it has never been rated out,I think I use maybe a half gallon an hour and can often get by on 4 hours a day.
I got one of them TEC's you folks talk about...and I like it.
But MIGHT add a propane catalytic some day.

Drdave, I am curious at that frequency you are getting while running at 2200 rpm?

Richard

The Kubota one that I mentioned has a 3,600 rpm 10kw head with a triple belt drive that runs the engine at 2,200 and the generator at 3,600 to get the 60 cycle.
It was originally built up by "Power Genny Inc." out of california with an 8kw head, I changed the head a couple of years ago to a Northstar 10kw BDG head and its been working great. The worst part is with the kubota running at 2,200 rpm it makes a lot more noise than at 1,800 rpm.

I have pulled that one out and found an Onan DKG diesel 10kw with the 4 cylinder kubota in great shape from a burned motorhome and am installing that now.
Keep in mind one little secret... When a big class-A motorhome burns, it usually only burns down to the floor, Most of the stuff below floor level survives. I got the generator for $2,500 and the 2,500 watt Heart Freedom inverter for $200 along with the front slide cradle that the generator was mounted in. All at a truck salvage place that bought the unit for the engine and transmission.

Ok, that explains it. Thanks.
BTW, when my Eagle burned, it was just the interior that was destroyed. The new owner, that bought it from the insurance company, actually drove it home to Texas, from WV with no problem.

Sometimes fires can leave critical items intact....remember Planes, Trains, and Automobiles- after the fire in the rental car...." The radio still works. "

Interesting comparison in terms of fuel use: an Onan gas gennie at 1800rpm and 4kw does about .5gal/hr.

Interesting how much more efficient diesels can be, ain't it?

Utterpower was testing a 3.5hp Changfa diesel hooked up to a big alternator. They were getting just over 2,000w of DC power out of it...and the fuel use was just ridiculously low. Significantly lower than the 1/4gal per hour a Yanmar-based 5kw diesel genny can do.

I have one of the 14 hp changfa's wow is it noisey! Course its the water cooled one and weighs about 300 lbs with a hand crank starter.

That 3.5 hp is an air cooled one and pretty lightweight if I am not mistaken.

Depending on the sophistication of the engine a gal of diesel will produce 16 to 18 hp.
To go much over that efficency a turbo , aftercooling or electronic rail style computer controlled injection is needed.

A New very large complex engine can get as much as 22hp per gal.

There are simple formulas to convert HP tp KW.

Newer Gas engines with OH valves can get as much as 12 or 14 HP / Gal at optimum speeds.
But its hard to overcome the added BTU in a gallon of diesel as the diesel is heavier , there is more to burn in the gallon.

The variable speed gas engines can slow up at light loads , making them AS efficent at light loads as the Diesel sets.

Then the choice is how much noise/stench you can put up with.

No, the 3.5hp Changfa they were experimenting with at utterpower was "hopper cooled" water and could easily be converted to radiator-cooled.

These are apparantly hard to get though. Not many were imported into the US.
