As most of you know I have installed a S-60 with a HT-740 & a 2.69 gear in a MCI-8. My question is I will be sliding the engine & Trans out one more time before nailing it down. Would a HT 748D be a better trans for this electronic engine? On my 740 I have the electric modulator & a stone Bennett shifter. I also have the tac generator for the speedo. Any advantage in swapping out or is what I already have as good. Thanks Ray |

Thanks Twodogs! The 740 setup will be fine, I just have a chance on a 748 & even though the airshifter etc works great I think less would be better, no air for shifter etc. Ray |

Look into a 741 -- it is an electronic version of the 740. Talks to the 60 series computor and has an electric shifter. Mine came from a garbage truck. 741R -- for refuse. |

Hello Ray. You might want to consider availablity of parts and knowledgeable service. Lots of folks across the bus world know and have worked on 740's, lots of parts and cores, there are very much fewer folks who even know there were other variants made, never mind worked on them. If the 740 is working, I'd think hard about sticking with it. Wow! 2.69! Your driveshaft and u-joints are going to be a'twistin! 1350rpm for 60 mph cruising! and 1850 rpm in 3rd gear at the same 60 mph! I am in violation of that coveting your neighbour's ox commandment.... At speed, you'll blow the doors off a brand new coach up hill, and get better fuel mileage on the flat! How is it from a standing start? happy coaching! buswarrior |

Thanks everyone. I assumed the ht748 is the electronic version 5 speed, is this correct. I also assumed the ht741 was the 4 speed electronic? If the 748 is not the ATEC it would be of no added value. didn't really need a 5 speed but it is what is being offered. The 741 may be the best bet. Actually the B500 would at one time be the best bet but to expensive and I had spent a few thousand to get the Meritor 2.69 in my old banjo housing. BusWarrior I haven't driven it yet but the calculations done by the knowledge people said that the startabilty would be very good. |

748 is a 4 speed with lock up (feels like 5th gear), B500 is a 5 speed w/ overdrive - HTH - Niles |

Yes Ray - It is my understanding that the 748 is an 'electronic' controlled tranny - which should be more suited to your mill - the 'World' B series transmission w/ overdrive would be the "most" suited IMHO - they are getting to be more available and more reasonably priced recently - and with the most recent pricing scenario of diesel, might be a more cost effective choice if you have the luxury of such a choice - it is the most popular combination out there - again IMHO - Niles |

For clarification to Niles post, which I'm sure he meant: The B500 has 6 gears with a lock up torque converter. It is a double overdrive. 4th gear is 1:1 5th is in the .7's:1 6th is .64:1 Typically, in the new stuff, a 4.56 rear gear is used, giving 55mph/90k in 4th at 2100, and at most responsible governed fleet speeds, both 5th and 6th gears will give you top speed, giving you some flexibility between fuel economy and performance. 6th gear at 70 mph/114k turns close to 1650 rpm As far as spending cash on your drivetrain to save fuel: it takes many, many miles to recoup any capital investment, a distance many of us will never go, a savings we'll never achieve. A used $500 car with a V8 can go an awful long way on the money saved by not making payments (and insuring) a new $15,000 car with the 4 cylinder. happy coaching! buswarrior |

Thanks for correcting me BW - Darn I hate being wrong - thats twice this millenia - lol - I was also questioning the gear ratio, as it doesn't compute - but I'm not gonna speculate on that - As for the world tranny - for argument sake consider the following; 1) It is not unreasonable that fuel could be $3.60 gal by end of year (and going higher) 2) Assume 6 mpg with the 740 series and maybe an unreasonable, but reported before, 50% increase in mpg with the world 3) .60 per mile would be .40 per mile at 9 mpg 4) Assume 15k (admitedly a rumored price)for a used world in good condition 5) 15k divided by .20 per mile would take 75k miles to recoup the expense - or 5 years of 15k mile per year driving - if fuel maintains that price and does not continue higher 6) Throw in the assumed higher resale value and there may be a benefit to some Of course, literaly, YMMV Niles P.S. - I'm gonna have to pay more attention to your fireside chats and not come late to the seminars |

Fuel has folks attention. I suspect in 2 years things will moderate alot. Biodiesel is a legit option for much of the country after the production capacity is built. I would really like to see that happen. |

" I suspect in 2 years things will moderate alot. " By Christmas the fuel should be down to where it was Last Xmass. Hopefully the Feds will figure a way to overide the NAMBY folks and we will begin to build refinerys , rather than tear down obsolete ones. My "sugestion " is a Fed tax of a buck a gal leved on each state that refuses to pull their weight. 85% of the coast is off limits even to exploration!, as the state govs dont want to harm the tourists eyes. SO FL and CA would pay, as well as MA where wind farms far at SEA are not allowed as Teddy the Swimmer doesn't want to see them 15-20 miles away. Even here in CT the tax would be on as CT refuses to allow an expansion of grid power lines. Follow Da Money!! Fuel purchasers would soon oust the govs protecting the NAMBYS.And each state could pull their weight. FAST FRED |
