A friend of mine has a MC5 that when the engine reaches 190 deg. coolant appeares to leak out of the coolant reservoir. The coach has a 8v71 and is diffidently not over heating. Just wandering if anybody out there has seen anything like this. Thanks in advance AL. |

I too have a 5 that leaks from the reservoir. Da book says that it may push out as much as 1 1/2 gallons after it has been filled. Mine pushes out exactly 2 gallons and then stops leaking. It does not seem to matter what the temp is. |

2 identical engines in 2 identical coaches may not maintain the same level of coolant in the surge tank.... its kinda like the 8th wonder of the unexplanied world..... dont worry about it unless it keeps on blowing all the water out... if it stabilizes at a particular level...its ok.... |

How are you filling the surge tank? On my 5A there is a 1/4" tube coming out of the right-hand side of the surge tank. It goes to a petcock valve located near the top of the right-hand radiator. The output of the valve goes to another tube which goes vertically down through the bulkhead above the engine and ends in the open air. The control for the valve is a vertical rod (with a lever on the end) which also goes through the bulkhead. To fill the surge tank you open the petcock and add antifreeze until it starts to run out of the open tube. |

Al, A surge tank is also an expansion tank. When water gets hot, it will expand to the point the tank is full when HOT. You will have to check it when is has been run to see where the level is. BE CAREFUL, it can burn you!!! Then check the level when cold and run it there. Also most tanks have a "pop off" valve built into them to release the pressure if it builds beyond a certain point set by the mfg. That valve begins to go bad with time (in Eagles anyway) and will let out water at a lower pressure. This should cease when the water level reaches the "full-hot" stage. The engine will run cooler with some pressure on it anyway. That is what the radiator cap is on you car for, to fill and hold a certain amount of pressure on the system. Also to let out excess pressure to keep from blowing hoses. Hope some of this helps. Gene R. |

Had the same problem on my mc5 recently. Solved it by replacing the old failed 4psi radiator cap w/ 7psi cap as recommended to me by C&J Bus Repair in Bloominton,MN. $6.00 solution is good! |
