Happy New Year to all the "BusNuts". Jim, my wife and I went to Ogden Utah to the FMCA Rally in our Apollo motorhome, and survived a 2 day trip each way and 3 days actually at the rally, on a 60 gallon fresh water tank. We drank bottled water. We both showered each day and were just very careful to save water where possible. Using paper plates and plastic flatware or stacking metal flatware in a container of water, cuts down on washing dishes. We found the biggest water saver was an inline on/off switch (plastic ball valve) on the shower head and also, to regulate the flow to the minimum. We had enough water left to make the carpet wet when a supply pipe came off under the kitchen sink as we had forgotten to switch off the pump!!!! Another thing I installed was a wash-down spray head for the potty. Helps clean up any marks quickly without using too much flushing water, these are often installed on motorhomes and travel trailers. Peter. |

The biggest water user is dishwashing. If you can learn how to wash dishes with minimum water, and are serious about watching your water use , the sailors calculation of A gallon, A Man ,A Day, works just fine. To this would be addes a gallon a shower , Navy style , wet down , wash with water OFF and then rinse the soap off. The usual RV toilet is very efficent, so is not a big water user. TO do dishes with min water takes having a small bowl of hot soapy water , to scrub the dishes and a Quart pitcher to use to pour water over the cleaned but still soapy dishes ,, sort of like a Navy shower for your pots and pans. We have a 130 gal fresh water tank and can last 8 days with showers for both of us each day. If wife runs dishwasher and clothes washer this reduces time to four days. I gained a day by running recirc lines from hot water line back to tank. This way you have instant hot water without the loss. Prather |

my wife and i have lived in rv fulltime on beaverlake 14 yrs. we use rainwater only.we have all amneties available to city dwellers.we use disposable two litre softdrink bottles and paint them black fill w/water punch hole in cap w/icepick cover bottle w/clear plastic bag and set in sun.two of these are more than enough to have a hot shower and good rinse. we used to take shower standing in washtub and use the bath water to flush toilet.right now we are frozen in and on emergency water rations. we find we have no difficulty gettin by on 5 gallons a day. |
