I just go to California from Florida. I took US 90 from San Antonio to Elpaso and had Interstate speeds, great scenery and was not passed by a single Semi. I recommend the route. I am using a Direcway satellite system for internet connection as a trial. Cost will be less than $1500. Any comments. Thanks, |

Highwayrunner, A few questions if this isn't too obnoxious. Whats it cost monthly? Do you have to go through another vendor as well since you're mobile? Do you also have direct TV? Can you get / do they support the in motion antennas? What do you use for an antenna? how is it mounted? Thanks, Jim |

Jim, this system is not for in motion systems. (I have a hard time typing on my keyboard while driving anyway.) Another company has a roof mount with an auto aiming system and is about $100 per month. I plan to make a mirror mount or other bus mount for the times I need something other than the tripod. Some people in the park have their dish under their RV, peaking out at the satellilte. Probablly not a good idea with airbags, but it can be ground mounted. The monthly cost is $59.95. Direct TV or other satellite tv is available for an additional $125 initial equipment cost plus the cost of tv satellite receiver bought elsewhere. Monthly satellite TV bill would be $25 for about 55 channels and up, paid separately from the Direcway bill. There is one RV in the park here using (?) Vonner (?, not sure of the name) internet phone service with a Direcway system. I was told all US is about $25 a month, and UK calls are 3 cents a minute. That RV owner does a lot of business with the UK and saves about $900 a month on phone bills now. All three services will work where there is no landline phone and no cellular signal. I will purchase the system next week. The price includes training in person for me and my wife, not by 800 number like when you sign up for DSL or Cable internet service. They nhave just come out with a 7000 model modem and launched a new satellite which is supposed to incresase download speeds. Right now I am told that download speeds are in the range of 750 to 850 kbps and upload speeds of 125 to 175 kbps. My son, tells me that I will be hapy with these speeds though I have been using a DSL at home. The dish is a little larger than a Direct TV dish, about 24 inches by 36 inches, tripod mounted. Set up should take about 30 minutes, I am told. There is an advantage to not having a roof mounted dish: The Bus can be in the shade and the dish moved to where it sees the satellite best. Sometimes a tree will block signal to a roof mount. Also the unit can be used at a house also. You can be set up on different satellites with coverage as far south as Guatemala or up into northern Canada. You can ask for a change in satellite when your needs change. Within the US you should be able to go for years without a satellite change. I'll give you all a more complete report when I get the system. |

Be aware.....if you're using a tripod mounted dish, you are considered a 'fixed' dish and will be assigned to the satellite by Hughes. It will be VERY difficult to 'change satellite when your needs change. If you are a 'mobile' unit, such as the Motosat unit, it is not a problem, although could involve a small charge. Check out www.datastormusers.com, www.motosat.com or www.groundcontrol.com for hardware and service packages available. I am a datastorm user and love it!! |

Daffycanuck, So that we all can be informed, under what conditions would a person need to change satellites? I had an automatic satellite seeking dish installed on my bus, but I carried a tripod dish and 100 feet of coax cable so that I could use it when I could not get reception from the mounted dish. I remember using it in northern Oregon and Washington, but do not recall if I ever used it in Canada. Richard |
