Hey all, I love this board, but every now and then someone puts out some info that is not entirely accurite. If you read something out of a manual you can be 98 to 100% sure the info is reliable. It's not always 100%,I work on aircraft for a living and every now and then I find mistakes even in the manuals. If you listen to something someone says,I would say the info will be accurite about 30% of the time. I try my best not to go out of my areas of expertice because I know there are people far more knowledgeable than myself on this board who will call me on anything I may be speculating about. If you haven't read it somewhere or had extensive experience with something the likelyhood your info is accurite drops to about 30% because you were told it by someone. |

Doug- Most people (myself included), come here for other's opinions. The "manual" may insist on a job being done in a certain manner, but someone often finds an easier way to accomplish the same task. When they post that information, it's their opinion. It's up to the reader and his or her own common sense, to determine if doing it in the different manner is suitable to their own needs. There's no right or wrong way to build a bus conversion for personal use. There are easier and less expensive ways, just as there are more complicated and costly ways. This board manages to provide something for everyone. I personally prefer to read the words of all, than a select few. |

i agree with doug. so, i need the manual to put a 60 series detroit and an 18 speed road ranger automatic into a 56 scenicruiser. please include the information on how to install the tow hitch and the updated steering system, and the anti-lock air brake system as well. thank you, -dd |

Kevin- Where's "the factory manual" that's going to tell you exactly how to make that much of a modification? What you -will- find, are comments and suggestions from those that have either accomplished that task, or tried to. And the comments and suggestions will be "opinions" based on the author's own experiences. Egads men.. Pretty picayune tonight, eh? |

that was kinda my point. there is *no manual* for what i'm wanting to do, and there won't be until i write it. i've seen the scenicruiser manual (thanks luke) and even it was... lacking. what i want is comments, ideas, suggestions. people who've been there, done that. i know i can get that 16v92ta i just found online into the bus... because i can weld, and i have a plazma cutter. but input from people who know is worth way more than any manual. -dd |

Hey Doug I understand where you are coming from on "the manual". You being an aircraft mechanic, the manual is written very specifically, technically for obvious reasons. I also understand as a doctor where the other guys are coming from. In medicine, there is more than one reason why it is called "a practice", not the least of which there are no manuals. What is not said by virtually everyone, when they give info on this and other boards, is that this is someones writing as to the best/worst way to do whatever. You're right in that when we give advice on this board, we should say "in my experience, in my opinion, based on my circumstance or some other qualifer that lets the reader know "this isn't coming from the manual". I appreciate your intent to make sure everyone understands to give the best advice they can that is "real time experience talking" unless they say "it is my opinion". I read everyones threads even when after reading it I say to myself, "I doubt he/she really did it". Rob 91 Prevost Missouri |

The main advantage of me being a wanna-be for over a year was that in the 2+ years that I have been reading the boards, I have (sort of) figgured out the personalities behind the more prolific posters. When they give advice, I already know how much of the content is likely to be BS versus useable information. Your mother warned you about talking to strangers. Get to know the people on the boards before you take their advece too seriously. Your mileage may vary, kyle4501 |

It is really unbelievable to me how much BS gets posted as gospel by some with no indication whatsoever that it is an opinion as opposed to fact. Some of the comments seem to have came off the s*it house wall, they are so far off base. I am not professing to be perfect, because I have been guilty of stating an opinion that later proved to be incorrect, but I always try and indicate whether the information I post is opinion, or fact based on my actual experience.
