So the water pump on my Onan Generator crapped out. I called Onan and for $150. they sent me a replacement. Low and behold, it came in a sealed Kubota package shipped from a Cummins distributor!

I’d asked the service rep when I called Onan if perchance this Onan generator was powered by a Kubota engine in disguise, or if a Kubota water pump might fit. He assured me my Onan generator was powered by an Onan engine and only an Onan water pump would fit. Hum.

So, any you folks know what the scoop is here? Is an Onan generator likely to be powered by a Kubota engine or is it coincidence and both Kubota and Onan are using a third party pump? $150. seems way to expensive for a water pump and any possibility of skipping the manufacturer for an aftermarket pump would be great.

The generator is an Onan 8.0 MDKD. I'm thinking of going to the local Kubota dealer and having him run the part number to see what comes up.

Thanks, Tim

Tim,
I have a 7.5KW Onan model DKD and it's definitely a Kubota engine even though Onan disavows the fact. I had a bad regulator on the generators charging system and replaced it with a genuine Kubota part at 1/3 the cost from Cummins (works fine now). I took the old regulator to a Kubota dealer who immediately recognised it and sold me the replacement. Identifying the Kubota model closest is the challenge, it's most likely an engine built by Kubota only for Onan but very similar to one or more of Kubota's standard products. So next time something breaks take the part to your nearest Kubota dealer & see if they have it.

My Yamaha EDL6500 has a tiny Kubota twin cyl diesel WC engine. Works fine...noisy. I didn't realize that Kubota parts were less expensive. Figured Kubota, as are most OEM Japanese import parts, would be expensive. I'm a Yamaha dealer and freely admit that I'm embarrassed by the cost of some replacement parts.

I found that my Universal genset, highly touted that Universal is the oldest engine manufacturer in America, used a Kubota engine! The casting logo of Kubota appears on every part. I know that John Deere used to sell what they called American technology tractor, was really a Yanmar. I guess that is somehow legal to do.

Like JR, I too have the Yamaha EDL6500 genset and have been able to get Kubota filters (air, fuel, oil) from NAPA for much cheaper than the Yamaha dealers want. Getting the numbers was the trickiest part, but using Wix's (the filter manuf.) nice website, I was able to plug in enough info to narrow it down and get good "hits". http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index.asp

The parts counter guys at NAPA were pretty impressed when I brought in printouts from Wix. They didn't even know such a "catalog" existed, and were almost willing to chunk their own cross-reference catalogs and use the Wix site.

Since Cummins bought Onan, their part$ have gone sky high. It's not too surprising that they're putting in reliable and well-built Kubota diesels in their sets. But at least Yamaha is right up front about using Kubotas in their gennys.
