Howdy folks I went to start a bus that's been sitting, and I couldn't get the air above 70 psu or so. I went to find the leak, and the brake pot on the R/R was hissing from the back (towards rear bumper) side. It is a "type 30" pot, the first one I've ever seen. It is on a 1070's era Crown bus. The spot where it is leaking normally carries a dust cover, about the size of six ounce totmato sauce can, made of rubber. the other side had the cover intacet, so when I pulled the cover om the good side, it exposed the head of a nut with some washers, the nut head was about 3/4". The bus was driven into the yard, so I don't know why the brake would be caged, if that is what has been done. However, the mechanics are lazy sometimes, and take parts off of my vehicles instead of ordering them. So I can't figure out whether they have stolen some kind of plug or seal or something off the back of the brake pot, or what exactly is missing. But back to the leaking pot: I can put my finger in the back of the pot that leaks, there is a hole about 7/16, and I can almost stop the leak. Only other info I can tell you about this rear brake pot is that it is different from every other one I've dealt with. It is shaped very much like a big can of coffee (regular, not decaf) and doesn't have two separate pregnant flying saucers, just one big fat cylinder. Help ne, and I will give you a double 12V92 quad turbocharged 60 foot yacht, or maybe just a thank you Pat Young '70 Gillig with CAT power, unfortunately |

Good Morning Pat I believe that I dont need the yacht, but It sounds like to me that you need to rebuild the break chamber they leak like that when the rubber in them gets a hole in It. Tony |

Sounds like a rotochamber, Pat. Look here: http://www.bendix.com/downloads/quick_ref_cat/Actuators.pdf Mohawk has parts to fix about any chamber. Use caution with spring brakes, obviously. bb |

If that brake pot has two clamps..DON"T touch the top one the thin will kill you. Slack the brake all the way off. Remove the airlines then undo the bottom clamp. This will give you axcess to the bottom brake rubber, if it has a hole in it replace it. If you cannot see a hole replace the pot...you can buy a "piggy back" the part you took off. |

Pat, Does your bus have air parking brakes? Dual chambers will have a service side and a emergency side. Count the air lines in, should be 2. If you start the bus and try to release the brakes, then the air starts hissing from the chamber your emergency side has a blown rubber. You DON'T want to try to take it apart. It has a very large coil spring in it. Go to Napa and get a new 30/30 chamber. Good rule of thumb with 30/30 or any duals is if one side leaks the other side has just as much age or wear on it. Replace the whole thing for piece of mind If your bus has a manual parking brakes (Lever) you have single chamber's or roto's. If that is the case, Build up the air and have a helper press the brake peddle while you check for air leaks. If it leaks then replace the chamber. Does that help? Dale |
