What is the deal with this?
Cannot I use a 5 gal gas container and use a magic marker to say 'diesel'?
Does Diesel melt plastic?
What does a legitimate diesel fuel container look like?

Chuckie-

If it's in a red container, it's explosive; highly flammable; dangerous.
It can confuse and delay the help you may need at the scene of an accident.

Just fill your containers at night under a low pressure sodium parking lot light. Then no-one will ever know what color the can is!

Geez, I've been using red for how long now? :-)
oops, hope the gas-can-patrol isn't watching this board!

Come on guys It's a safety factor. Pure and simple. Gasoline in red cans and diesel in labeled can keeps you from inadverntly using wrong fuel.
This board is getting away from what it was started for. Just give the correct answer without all the BS.

"Bussnots board"

ROTFLMAO.

I've noticed that the yellow containers cost about double what the red ones do... because of exponentially more red ones out there, surely.

Being a law abiding citizen and all, I do have the yellow one for my filter priming/ emergency fuel that I carry around at all times. Every couple of fillups I'll dump it into the tank and put fresh fuel in it. That and three sets of filters: dontleavehomewhithoutit...

Happily, I'm taking EIGHT of the red 5 gal. cans full of varnished-out gasoline from my now- departed gas genny's 50 gallon tank to my city's haz. mat. place tomorrow for "Free Chemical Drop Day." Also 16 gallons of oil. They won't know what hit 'em!

Remember hearing about the person trying to steal diesel fuel from another RVer.... He stuck a hose into what he thought was the fuel tank and started sucking on the hose. He somehow got a mouth full of sewer from the waste tank.

But I agree, Use the tank of your choice and Label it REAL BIG all over it. As a firefighter I've seen people put gasoline in a can that was used as a kerosene can and back to the kerosene. They added a small amount of gasoline into their space heater. KABOOM!

Jeff, As a volunteer firefighter, I got called to a 10-70 structure fire one evening. When we got there a kerosene heater had flames licking a 9 foot ceiling. Turns out the guy's wife had filled it with gasoline. You ain't kidding LABEL LABEL LABEL!!!

I do not think you havbe a Blue fresh water can. At least that is not what it was originally intended for. As I recall, fresh water cans are green.

Richard - check your e-mail. I just sent you pictures of my cans...... As you will distinctly see - the large blue can says "water". Underneath the "water" label it states "do not use for the transportation or storage of combustible or flamable liquid." Therefore, I would say it is intended for water...

My dad used to have some 5 gallon plastic water jugs. They were the same red as a gas can. They also said "for water only." Maybe things have changed these were from the early 1970s.

I was always under the impression that a certain color stood for a certain type of material, and Ed's photos proved me wrong. What is somewhat surprising is that I have a green container labeled for water.
Thanks Ed for setting me straight.

And I am now a firm believer that the standard for labeling containers containing flammable or non-flammable material is that there is no standard!

I previously posted the Hazmat link.

Ya'll know well, that I hate "codes". But, if my bus is sitting
aside the road burning with me and my family inside, I don't
want that red can filled with water keeping the fire fighters
from acting quickly. When they see a red can, they're going
to want to fight the fire a bit differently, since the red will indicate
that the can contains a highly flammable/explosive liquid.

The fire fighter shining a light into a burning building isn't
going to be able to discern the writing on a container,
but they sure as hell can see the color of it. You want them
taking cover, or getting your family out? The seconds lost
getting prepared for an explosion, while that can is really
filled with a non-explosive, can cost a life.

I hate codes, but every-so-often, there's good reason to
follow a code....

(my two cents)

"why are the diesel pump handels green"

Yet another standard that is not so standard. Down the road from here is a BP station and all the handles Diesel and Gas are green.

I always wondered why the color for sewer lines is green. I would think they should be black or brown, lol.

To be taken internally.

Keep the women away from it, they'll try to wash their hair with it!

My diesel can is plastic. Yellow in colour.
