Max horsepowers about the same (up to 330hp) ?? . good / bad . make a good bus motor ?? . reliable / good mph ?? . better than my 6v92TA ddec ii . I know they turn a different direction then mine but it has a "stevenson engineering(sp??) - reverser in front of the v730 tranny Pete RTS/Daytona |

I THINK the Series 40 was/has/will be discontinued in trucks, buses and automotive stuff due to lack of sales or interest. May be wrong too. May be confused with the 45 or 55. The Series 50 is a true heavy duty 4 banger that can be equipped with a Jake Brake. The Series 40 can only be used with an exhaust brake. Grayhound I believe uses the 50. The Series 40 is probably a little bit smaller/lighter even tho it has 6 cylinders and not 4. The Series 50 is kinda tall, but kinda short also. Power wise, in my opinion, the Series 50 has the advantage, if one can get to to physically fit. One can "upchip" this mill to 350 hp (fire service) or even 400 hp or more. (Military/marine) Good luck. |

Isn't the S-40 the former DT-466 IH engine? |

Pete, My S-50 out performs a CAT 3126 I had with same power. The CAT got 7.5 MPG, the S-50 gets 10.5 pushing same weight. Chuck Newman Oroville, CA |

The Series 40 is the DT466 painted blue. I would go with the Series 50. |

"The Series 40 is the DT466" DD was having these made in 2 sizes 466 and a 530, but is aparently discontinuing their sales. The DT 466 is a GREAT engine , used in many smaller trucks and skoolies for decades. I have seen one stuck in the back of an old 31ft Flex , where it ran great , did 75 and gave the owner 12 to 13mpg on a SLUSHPUMP! While not heavy enough for most coaches , their abundance an very low cost is making them the darling of the marine scene , for the folks that only need 50 to 150hp cont . Marine wet exhaust manifolds are now avilable , so it might make a great gen set motor for folks that "need" Really big power. FAST FRED |

For those that do not know the DT466 and DT530 (replaced by the DT570) are from International Harvestor. Not sure of the actual numbers, but suspect that they may produce more diesels in the USA than any other mfg as they allso mfg the 7.3 and 6 liter power stroke diesels used by Ford. Look around and you will see that most school buses and most medium duty truck are International. These engines are still used in many of the Case/IH farm tractors. |

IHC also made a smaller version of the dt466 as the dt380.... very popular in school busses.... |

When we moved to Colorado we rented a Penske truck. It was powered with a DT-466. We did 75 all day on the interstate. It also got over 10MPG. I was actually sad to have to give the truck back. |

Not DT380--DT360. Durable, but completely overwhelmed in anything over 20,000lbs. I've seen DT466's (and the newer DT466E's) powering everything from school buses & wreckers to tri-axle dump trucks & semi tractors. Absolute best medium-duty diesel ever made, bar none. The DT530 and 570 are, I think, stroked 466's. |

Hey Fast Fred, how does the size of the 466 compare to a Westerbeast 4107? I havent heard of these in marine stuff . Around here they just buy a new boat. How stupid. I finally got your old hand bilge pump to work. Dont ask how many holes we had to re-tap! Hope we dont need it! My Pa passed away last Jan. He was a great P2V pilot. Always had the Alpha by the #.(4A).Dinah Moe Dave and Dori Dezeldave@hotmail.com |

Pete...If your sticking it in a rts the series 50 is a great easy swap..you have lots of room..50 is just about a 3ft cube..looked at putting one in my 04 and would have had to run auto and moved lots of other stuff around..still looking for another pre 60 gmc to try it with though...will give you better torque and mileage...IF it is already tied to the transmission(through ddec) you will be limited to the highest hp and torque rating of the factory computer...the best 50 computers are fire truck and big truck(easierst to find and cheapest used)..but you may still have to untie the trans to up the hp and torq...pretty easy looking swap for a RTS.. |

"how does the size of the 466 compare to a Westerbeast 4107." The 4-107 was a taxi engine in the UK and does real well at under 20hp & under 2000rpm for cruise. They weigh about 600lbs +, depending on what tranny is bolted on. They last "forever" if asked to burn under a gal per hour. The DT466 and its bigger & smaller cousins are about 1400lb plus the tranny . Not in the same league, in terms of what they can be installed in. FAST FRED |
