I'm about to be sticking a set of jakes onto my Cummins 220. My question is, The engine manual tells both hot and cold valve adjustment specs, and specifies that the valves need to be "final" adjusted when the engine is hot. THe problem with this is, with the Crown pancake engine, the jakes cover the valve adjustment nuts AND you can't really run the engine much with the Jakes and valve covers off, because it pumps tons of engine oil out on the ground... So there's a catch 22 here. I can adjust the valves cold and then install the jakes, but I can't see a way to adjust the valves hot unless I remove the jakes and make a hell of a mess... any experience ? Hmmmm, I guess I could get the engine really hot and adjust the valves just prior to starting the install, but that seems hasslesome especially since I'll have to remove the turbo and exhaust system first before I can even do that (The reaon for adjusting the valves in the first place is that the rocker boxes have to be removed, exhaust rocker ground down a bit, and the mess replaced, as part of the process of installing the jakes) There's only .002 difference between hot and cold in the specs... wonder if a cold adjustment would suffice... it would certainly save TONS of hassle Thanks Gary |

HI Henry, I have that booklet too, but thanks for the offer! All it says is "install the Jakes and adjust valves per engine manual"... works fine for a truck but the engine manual doesnt specifically cover pancake engines with Jakes. So I'm just going to do the valve adjustment cold and leave it at that. I'm sure I won't blow it up... Yup, Crowns forever, or at least a long long fun time.. |
