So... Tom at Vehicle Clinic has informed us that the mystery problem we all speculated on with our vs2-8 is that the drive coupler is badly damaged. He said it doesn't really matter how it happened, whether the pump wasn't working of the shaft cracked or damaged, it went dry(?do I have this lingo right?) and he said it will be cheaper to replace than repair the tranny. He said he will probably not have a problem locating one, and he would prefer to get a part out of a currently running bus than one that has already been taken out- he said it's easier to test to see if it's working that way. Cost is still unknown, but we are now officially past the simple solution stage. Thanks again for all the input, all...we will post the outcome, and if anyone knows of a vs2-8 running in a bus near Detroit, feel free to say so... |

Vehicle Clinic is in Detroit, the phone # is (313) 895-7600. Tom is the name of the mechanic who actually knows about vs2-8's, and I don't know where their address is, I guess as silly as it seems I don't need to find them until I get the bus repaired. We are in Minneapolis area, I have never even seen my purchase yet, although my husband/driver has. Tom is very nice, and I bet they have got to be listed in the yellow pages, only problem is I don't have a copy. |

Yes, I had talked to them about a month ago, when Kevin at Wolverine Freightliner said the tranny was shot. Tom at Vehicle Clinic said he'd prefer to get a part out of a running bus as first choice, as it's easier to test that it's working properly. Also, Nimco is selling this Tranny AS IS, so if I do spend the cash to ship it out and put it in, and there is a problem with it, we won't know until after I've already paid for the trouble. I might end up posing the question of getting the Nimco one examined pre-installation, if it comes down to it. Thanks, I really appreciate all this information. |

" Also, Nimco is selling this Tranny AS IS, so if I do spend the cash to ship it out and put it in, and there is a problem with it, we won't know until after I've already paid for the trouble." Nimco has a good rep in the trade and many times their parts have been checked out before shipping. For Extra $$$ a DD dealer can dyno test the tranny , perhaps even Nimco has the ability. Your ARE not buying a "pig in a poke" as they do have a rep to uphold. Call them and TALK to them about your situation, FAST FRED |

Nimco, Will pull the pan and inspect the trans. And as Fast Fred said, They will (at least they used to)check the trans for you. Sometimes they have some history on or first hand knowledge of the unit. They knew the exact mileage and were the bus was from of the V730 they sold us. They are a great source of parts. I trust them. Best thing is call them and tell them your situation. If you don't specify what you want they may just ship you a rebuildable core because they didn't know. Does the Bus Clinic have someone that will dyno it for you?? Dale |

That's good John, LOL LOL. Peg, A dyno is used to test run the tranny on a test stand. What they will do is mount your trans to a large electric motor or diesel engine on a stand, then test the function of the transmission before being installed in your bus. The dyno will test your trans to simulate being in a bus. They can check to see if it slips or overheats or needs a rebuild without the expense and time to install in your bus. Dale P.S. If it don't work feed it to the Dino |

When I bought my first one, I had thought as a matter of necessity to overhaul it. The rebuilder says, pull the pan, if it has no parts in it, it will last your lifetime. |

I had my out-of-bus HT740 "dynoed" before I went to the trouble of installing it. $200.00 for the trip and test was well spent in my opinion. |

Thanks. I'll talk to Tom at Vehicle Clinic and Nimco next week and see where this is going. I'd like to hope that it will last my lifetime, or at least long enough to earn it's cost in our lives so far! |
