I was just watching the History Channel. They had a show about big machines. They showed a 11 cylnder diesel engine made by MAN. It is a marine engine. Just one cylnder is over 3'. The tech even took the camera man into the engine through a service door. It produces over 100,000 HP. I seem to remember somebody posting a picture of one of these on here a while back. |

Anybody remember the site for that Hyundai diesel? I have pics if anybody wants. They show the 6 story block, the crank, and the cylinders, and a blue whale trying to father children in cylinder #2. (That part is not pretty) pat young |

While SIZE has an interest , the mechanical marvels are the really complex engines. I used to think it was great putting 52 inches of manifold pressure to an alchohol injected air craft engine that was 3 rows of 9 cylinders each. Some even had 4 rows of 9 cylinders. But the Russians have us beat hands down! Their Zvezda radial Diesels , used on Raketa class hydrofoils (www.hydrofoils.org) are the KING of complex!! With 7 banks of 6,8,or 15 cylinders and almost 3.5 liters per cylinder there is a lot of engine in a very small space, putting it in the power density of smaller gas turbines. The largest at 112 cylinders has a power output of 7350kw. 42 , 56 or 112 cylinders!! and they have been operating them for decades. FAST FRED |
