The radiator fan fluid drive on my '77 AMG has some play in it. The engine is an 8v71. I can grab the shaft and twist it back and forth about a 1/4". Is this normal or does this indicate some worn gears in the drive? I'm currently swapping engines and the fluid drive on the donor engine is setup differently so I don't think I can use it. Any ideas would certainly be appreciated. Thanks

The donor you have has a direct drive. If you have the Tourus drive, the direct would be a little shorter causing the fan to not nest in the shroud. If it is the tourus hydraulic drive (it can be spun by hand, with the engine not running of course), there is a single bearing that is probably going bad by your description. Get a new bearing and seal. I had real bad results with Mohawk on the seal. I don't know why, but 3 in a row leaked. I finally got one through my local DD dealer and it is doing fine.

I don't know that I would rebuild the whole thing. Just fix that bearing. I did mine and I think I took it apart at least 5 times. Some of the shim parts are no longer available and the service information is lacking in the book. It is not a DD part, it was made for bus mfg. DD won't know a thing about it. The service info is in the bus books, not an 8V71 book.
