I have a Allison 740 in my bus and I use Quaker State Dexron III in it. Quaker State was the only oil I found that was lisated for C4 Allison. My oil pan does not have a drain plug in it. The fiest time I changed the oil I removed the pan. I just changed it just the other day and I used a electric fuel pump to get the oil out I used a piece of tubing and put it down the filler pipe to remove the oil. I know there was a small amount that I did not get out but I didn't have to remove the pan. It would work better if the oil was warm.

I recently investigated transynd extensively.

For HT 740/754, you probably do not need it, IF, you keep the trans temperatures down. It is more desireable if you have a retarder, where temperatures will be hotter.

The world transmissions, 4060 and B500, are more likely to need the synthetic. For those, with a retarder, you definetely should consider it.

Detroit dealers sell it for about $30 a gallon.

I've never seen a Dexron ATF recently that WASN'T listed as suitable for Allisons.

Is it OK to use dextron 2? I don't think they made dextron 3 in 1984 when the bus was made, if so, I don't remember ever seeing it

Hello.

The anecdotal stories I've heard from those with tranny temp gauges are that changing out to synthetic, an HT 740 will show 10 degrees Farenheit cooler.

Since it's heat that kills trannies, the added expence of synthetic sure seems cheaper than a rebuild.

Also, Amsoil has a similiar synthetic transmission juice for less than Allison.

Follow the path that is appealing to you!

happy coaching!

Of course.....

The heat it does not remove from the metal (by nature of the
lubricant used), could be detrimental to the product in question.

I'd use what the manufacturer recommends....

John,

Im not following your point.

Since trannys don't consume fuel directly, and synthetic has virtually the same physical heat capacity as regular oils, I feel the heat generated comes from internal friction - which the synthetic oil does a better job of reducing.

Most of the busses we convert were designed before synthetics were in popular use. What's the current recommendations is a more relevant question, wouldn't you think?
