I pulled this information off another board and thought it might be interesting to those who are perplexed with US fuel prices making travel at 6MPG almost impossible, particularly those on a fixed or retirement income. For those in the Southern states, it might be a no-brainer to at least fill up across the border before a trip to Grandma's for Christmas:

Here are the fuel prices for october 2005:
Magna.............$ 6.12 pesos per liter
Premium..........$ 7.23 pesos per liter
Diesel..............$ 5.06 pesos per liter

These prices are in liters, and 1 gallon = 3.7854 liters.

Today (october 4th) 1 dollar = $ 10.70 pesos (+/-)

Using the previous information, this is what we have....

Magna.............$ 2.165 dollars per gallon
Premium..........$ 2.557 dollars per gallon
Diesel..............$ 1.790 dollars per gallon

Of course, the real question is why the large disparity from US pricing?

I'd be careful with those prices - check your source. Our experience in Mexico has been that diesel is more expensive there than it is in Canada. And our prices are usually slightly higher than yours.

Pemex, Mexico's state oil monopoly, is one of the world's largest oil companies, pumping more than any company outside the Middle East.

The Mexican government and Pemex control the price.

And most of everything else..... We are free (albeit somewhat less
each day), and should either accept the free enterprise corporate
methodology or fight it ourselves....... or suffer more losses of
freedom by insisting the gubberment control it.

We forced lower oil prices before.

I like those prices!

I'm heading south this winter myself. I just have to get enough cash to drive my bus from Palm Springs, CA to the Mexican border!

Can anyone verify those prices?

I lived 8 years in Mexico, when diesel gets too high all the truckers park thier trucks in the streets until the government lowers it. When you make 30 pesos a day the cost of fuel can really hurt and Pemex keeps the cost as low as it can. Gasoline is often higher, diesel is usually lower.

We didn't travel in Mexico last winter but did the previous 8 winters. I just checked my trip log from 2004 - we paid NP 5.02/litre for diesel that winter. I'd say it's unlikely that the price has only gone up 4 centavos in the intervening two years but I guess it is possible.

We'll be back down there this winter but I won't go expecting cheap fuel because that has never been my experience. If it turns out that fuel is cheap then that will be a pleasant surprise.

I really want to relocate to SD, how are housing prices? Has it gone mad like everywhere else on the west coast?

Christopher, I too live in San Diego, and housing prices are very high here. I bought in 2000, probably paid too much, and my house has doubled in value (or is that price) since then.

Frank, have you had any issue with the quality of fuel in Mexico? Do they question you at the border? Can you pay in $? Do you get extra insurance to go across?

I will answer even though the question was not directed to me. I never had an issue with fuel quality although expect to go through filters more often, mostly because the pumps and tanks are not properly maintained.

There are stops all over mexico, although at the border they tend to just flag people through. Road stops tend to be manned by well armed 19 year old slodiers, they look intimidating but in time you realize they are just bored. They ask if you have drugs or guns and let you go on, they really are not interested in intimidating you, just serving thier mandatory 2 years before going home.

You can pay in dollars anyplace in Mexico, but they will tend to give you change in Pesos, at what every exchange rate they see fit, which is not always good.

You need mexican liability insurance, otherwise if you are in an accident, you have to remain there until everything is sorted out in court. You can get it at "Discover Baja" travel club in San Diego on Clairemont Drive, a year is pretty cheap.

I drive to the Baja 8 to 10 times per year. Never had fuel quality issues. Diesel is diesel and gas is gas and water is NOT water! LOL

For folks that worry about going further south ther are excellent filters

"Baja Filter"that is used as a pre filter .

It slows down fuleing a bit , sorta like using an auto nozzle , rather than the big truck pump at a truck stop.

I have used a unit on a boat for decades and been suprised at sometimes getting GROPSH in fine US marinas , and busy workboat fuel outlets.

"It" happens, sometimes shop keepers are slow or cheap about replacing the delivery filters , sometimes the water & bugs are selivered to the station, premixed.

Caution costs $50 or so and a couple of min of your time.

Do it your way,

FAST FRED
